The present summary attempts to outline the development of the training of librarians in Hungary, its present situation and its further trends. The past and present of the system of special education will also be explained briefly. Within this scope, the system of the university education of librarians and documentalists will be presented in detail with particular attention to the curriculum and programme of the university education. The fact that we have not dealt here with basic and secondary training and postgraduate education for librarians does not mean that these forms are considered of minor importance. The library culture of a country can be furthered properly only by having specially trained experts working in libraries, in bibliography, and in documentation jobs on various levels. Each library, bibliographical or documentary institution wishing to work efficiently can do so only if specialists with basic, secondary and high-grade training are available in the number required by the duties to be performed. The reasonable division of labour does not only improve the quality of work, but is also the most economical solution. Nevertheless, there are fewer problems with regard to basic and secondary education throughout the world than in highlevel, particularly university level, education. This will therefore be dealt with in detail.Based on experience gained in the last 15 years, the present system of high-grade library education has been worked out over a period of two years; it is expected to fit permanently into the system of training specialists at the university. At the same time, the first steps have been taken to develop a scheme for the training of documentalists at the university. It is hoped that the new system of special university training introduced in September 1963 will furnish all the theoretical and historical knowledge as well as the practical experience so much needed by each librarian, bibliographer and documentalist. It is also hoped that it will further self-education and the scientific research activity. Experience so far seems to justify these hopes.
