Resumo: Identifica as competências pertinentes à busca e ao uso da informação por estudantes de Ensino Médio na modalidade Educação de Jovens e Adultos na cidade de Ribeirão Preto/SP. Quanto aos objetivos específicos, identificou-se o perfil dos alunos e as dificuldades encontradas para a busca e uso da informação, apresentou-se as competências necessárias e sugeriu-se programas para o desenvolvimento de Competência em Informação. Trata-se de estudo de caso único, de abordagem quanti-qualitativa e amostragem por acessibilidade, com 128 alunos do ensino médio (jovens e adultos) e uso de questionário para a coleta de dados. Conclui-se que, independente da faixa etária, os educandos demonstram a necessidade de aquisições e/ou melhorias na leitura e escrita, manejo da informação e reconhecimento das necessidades de informação, deflagrando a ausência da escola neste processo, visto que aprenderam sozinhos ou com terceiros a utilizar as TIC. As for the specific objectives, the profile of the students and the difficulties encountered for the search and use of the information were identified, presented the necessary competencies and suggested programs for the development of Competence in Information. It is a unique case study, with quantitative-qualitative approach and sampling by accessibility, with 128 high school students (young and adults) and use of a questionnaire to collect data. It is concluded that regardless of the age group, students demonstrate the need for acquisition and/or improvements in reading and writing, information management and recognition of information needs, triggering the absence of the school in this process, since they learned alone or with third parties to use ICT.
