Primal reflex release technique (PRRT) is a paradigm shift in the treatment of pain which follows the principle of rebooting the autonomous nervous system (ANS), by down regulating the upgraded sympathetic component of ANS in a variety of pain syndromes. To check the effect of PRRT on chronic neck pain, a case study was done using Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) as outcome measures. After conducting the one minute nociceptive exam for startle reflex, indication of the upgraded Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS), a single session of PRRT was carried out on a 24 year old female patient with chronic neck pain having a VAS score of 7 on activity and that of 5 on rest. Pre and post treatment HRV analysis was done using frequency domain and time domain parameters. Post PRRT treatment, an improvement in VAS scale with a score of 4 on activity and that of 3 on rest was seen. HRV showed a decrease in HFnu (26.7 vs 24.5), RMSSD (63.553 vs 59.216), SDNN (28.58 vs 34.82) and PNN50 (48.3 vs 42.5) which refers to decreased parasympathetic activity, and increased LFnu (73.3 vs 75.5) which indicates increased sympathetic activity. This was the first study evaluating the effect of PRRT with HRV. Further research needs to be conducted to validate HRV findings in chronic pain patients undergoing PRRT using a large sample size and interval based assessment of HRV. Background : The geriatric population is defined as population aged 60 years and above. (1)During this age many of the systems undergo deterioration. Balance problems in elderly are most commonly due to multi factorial condition which may include age related or disease-related declines in the balance system. Research shows that altered balance is the greatest collaborator towards falls in the elderly with a high correlation between balance deficit and the incidence of falls. Iyengar yoga, one of the active, or Hatha, yoga techniques, is a system for developing physical and mental well-being through stretching of all muscle groups for strength, flexibility, and physical balance. Yoga as a complementary therapy is thought to be more therapeutic than traditional exercise because it involves active engagement between mind and body. Its practice has been associated with increased muscle strength, endurance, flexibility, range of motion and cardiopulmonary endurance. It mainly works on increasing body awareness and proprioception, which will lead to improvement of balance in older adults. Objectives: To compare pre and post score of Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction in Balance (CTSIB-M). To compare pre and post score of Time up and go test. Materials and Methodology: This was an experimental study that included 40 participants, healthy older adults between the age group 60-75 years, both male and female. The subjects were randomly divided in to 2 groups; Group A was the experimental group whereas group B was the control group. The experimental group was made to perform yogasanas for the duration of four weeks for 5 times a week whereas the control group was not given any intervention. Result and Conclusion: The study conducted concludes that yogasanas are effective in improving balance in elderly individuals at the end of four weeks compared to control group. Thus, it can be used clinically to improve balance in geriatric population.
Breathing is the most vital and important function of our body which helps in the maintenance of homeostasis of our body. Breathing being the multifactorial function dependant on Biochemical, Biomechanical, Psychosocial and Neuromusculoskeletal components. The vector of all components results breathing as the complex yet crucial function of our body. This breathing can be affected in any of the conditions affecting any of the above mentioned components. One of the reason being the imbalance between parasympathetic (PNS) and sympathetic (SNS) component of Autonomous Nervous System(ANS). Imbalance between PNS and SNS can result in the “Flight and Fight mode” which keeps the Pain factor on resulting in faulty breathing leading to Breathing Dysfunction. In the present observational cross sectional study, 200 individuals with various musculoskeletal complaints were identified and given, “Self assessment of breathing questionnaire” and “Nijmegen Questionnaire” as these questionnaires covers Biomechanical and Psychosocial aspects of breathing respectively. Scoring for both the questionnaires were done for each individual and data was recorded and analysed using pie chart. we concluded that breathing dysfunction is present in various musculoskeletal complaints predominantly in back pain, followed by neck pain, shoulder pain, and knee pain. Most affected gender is female affecting the Biomechanical as well as psychosocial component. We recommend further research for detailed assessment of breathing in various musculoskeletal conditions. Postural and physiological changes are the distinct changes occurring in the adolescence which contributes fitness level of a child. The biomechanics of these children are highly affected by load carriage while climbing stairs which results in increase in cardio respiratory responses. Evaluation of the cardio respiratory changes is necessary in curbing further damage. In the study we evaluated the effect of backpack load influencing the cardio respiratory measures in stair climbing adolescents. 100 adolescents subjects aged 13-16 yrs were selected for the study, with graded loading for three consecutive days. Heart rate, rate of perceived exertion and respiratory rate were measured pre and post loading. Values of all the parameters on each day were compared. With increase in load, increase in heart rate, rate of perceived exertion and respiratory rate were significant when compared with progression in load. Although the measure which is highly affected amongst these was heart rate. The backpack with 30% load produces the elevation of variables at a greater extent hence there should be curbing of weight of 30% of adolescent’s body weight.
