Neurofibroma of the soft palate is an unusual tumor and probably only two cases have been reported in English literature previously. Solitary isolated neurofibroma of the soft palate not associated with von Recklinghausen's disease is even more infrequent. To the best of our knowledge, this case represents the third reported in English literature. Complete surgical excision was achieved after tracheostomy due to envisaged difficulty in intubation. We present a 40-year-old man with an uncommon soft palatal neurogenic tumor.
Abstract:Rhinosporidiosis is a rare infective chronic granulomatous lesion cause by Rhinosporidium seeberi, which is endemic in some part of Asia, although sporadic cases seen in America, Europe and Africa. The lesion presents as a soft tissue mass of the nose (primary site), eye and urethra. The organism is difficult to culture and the diagnosis is based on microscopy and histological examination of the lesion. Nasal rhinosporidiosis is uncommon disease in our environment which mimics neoplasm in its clinical features. We report a case of nasal rhinosporidiosis in an 18 year old male rural farmer from North Eastern Nigeria.
Laryngeal foreign body is very rare in sane adults. Diagnosis is mostly achieved by high index of suspicion and clinico-radiological examinations. Delayed presentation pose a high risk of complications and also presents a challenge to both otolaryngologists and anaesthiologists. Prompt intervention is all that is needed to avoid morbidity and/or mortality. We report a case of delayed and unusual presentation of impacted laryngeal foreign body in a 35 year old man presenting with unremitting hoarseness for 3 months.
Background: Knowledge of prevention and removing the barriers of stigma and discrimination is a critical public health issue for HIV/AIDS prevention strategies in Nigeria. Objective: This paper is aimed at accessing the knowledge of HIV/AIDS prevention, causes and effects of stigma and discrimination towards people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), among the final year dental students. Methodology: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study among final year dental students in accredited dental schools in Nigeria, 2016. At the time of conducting this study there were 8 accredited dental schools in Nigeria. Simple random sampling technique was used to pick four schools from the existing eight. All data obtained was analysed using IBM SPSS version 21.0. Results: Out of the 70 questionnaires administered 60 were filled and returned giving a response rate of 85.7%. Half (50.0%) of the respondents exhibited a good level of knowledge of HIV prevention. About two-thirds (66.7%) of the respondents exhibited good level of knowledge of HIV discrimination and stigma. The main cause of stigma against PLWHA was lack of knowledge about HIV (86.7%). The main effect of stigma on PLWHA as stated by 83.3% is that they hide their HIV status. Conclusion: The study showed that most final year dental students have good knowledge of HIV prevention; causes; and effects of stigma and discriminations among people living with HIV/AIDS. However, they need more training on how occupational HIV exposure should be handled in the clinic.
