Commuting is an integral part of many people’s everyday life providing a transition between private and working life. It does, however, lead to negative impacts at a personal and social-ecological level (health impacts, lack of time, climate emissions, etc.). This article is based on the transdisciplinary research project “CommuterLab” (PendelLabor), which investigates commuting practices in the German Rhine-Main region. Using a practice-theoretical approach, we conducted a qualitative empirical study to explore how commuters organise the transition between their personal life and job. Through our analysis, we were able to identify different meanings of commuting and its strong interconnection with other everyday practices. This allowed us to gain deep insight into the social (non-)sustainability of commuting. At the core of our results are four different types of commuting practice whose impact on social sustainability differs widely. Furthermore, since the interviews were conducted during the coronavirus pandemic, respondents had their first experience of strongly reduced commuting. This in turn allowed insights into the changing organisation of everyday life and the impact of reconfigured commuting practices on social sustainability. Based on these results, we drew conclusions about the dynamics of commuting in terms of social sustainability.
Die dynamische Entwicklung im Bereich neuer Mobilitätsdienstleistungen hat dazu geführt, dass der städtische Mobilitätsmarkt von einer hohen Dynamik und einer Vielzahl neuer Akteure gekennzeichnet ist. Smartphones und mobiles Internet unterstützen die neuen Angebote wie flexibles, stationäres oder Peer-to-Peer-Carsharing sowie Mitnahme- und Fahrradverleihsysteme. Die neuen Angebote reagieren auf eine veränderte Nachfrage, generieren aber wiederum auch neue Nutzungsmuster. Kommunale und regionale Akteure stehen vor der Aufgabe, auf die neuen Herausforderungen, die sich in räumlichen und politischen Konflikten niederschlagen können, zu reagieren. Die vorliegende Studie zeigt auf Basis einer Bestandsaufnahme von Sharing-Systemen in der Region FrankfurtRheinMain Handlungsoptionen für Vertreter aus Politik und Verwaltung auf, um die neuen Angebote im Sinne einer nachhaltigen Verkehrs- und Stadtentwicklung zu integrieren. Dabei zeigt sie zunächst die Chancen und Herausforderungen auf, die sich aus den jüngsten Entwicklungen ergeben. Anschließend folgt eine ausführliche Bestandsaufnahme, die sich in sechs Handlungsfelder gliedert: Fahrradverleihsysteme, Carsharing, Mitnahmeangebote und Mitfahrparkplätze, Verknüpfung des öffentlichen Verkehrs mit multimodalen Angeboten, multimodale Mobilitätsapps und -plattformen sowie Parken. Dabei werden Aussagen zu Angebotsformen, verkehrlichen und ökologischen Wirkungen sowie zu regionalen Entwicklungen getroffen. Anschließend werden auf Basis vorhandener Untersuchungen und im Rahmen des Projekts durchgeführter Fokusgruppen Nutzungsmuster, Bekanntheit und Attraktivität von Sharing-Systemen dargestellt. Die Handlungsempfehlungen wurden in mehreren Workshops mit regionalen Praxisakteuren aus den Bereichen Stadtverwaltung, Carsharing, Verkehrsverbund, Fahrradverleihsysteme, Mitfahrangebote etc. und vertiefenden Expertengesprächen entwickelt.
Enhancing blue-green infrastructure (BGI) will help cities adapt to climate change. This study focused on urban society, specifically on residents, the housing and real estate sector, and municipal administration in the cities of Frankfurt and Stuttgart, and investigated ways to enhance BGI in line with their perceptions, expectations and requirements. A particular emphasis was placed on periods of hot, dry weather. During future workshops, actor analysis, expert interviews and two expert workshops, the positions, level of knowledge and attitudes of the various groups were examined and barriers to BGI identified, in addition to discussions about measures to overcome these barriers. The results showed that within urban society the greatest support for BGI comes from residents, followed by municipal employees, while actors in the housing and real estate sector are the most reluctant. It became evident that there is a need for action to overcome a range of barriers. Overall, political backing, alliances between stakeholders, encouragement of the housing and real estate sector to take action, and a focus on initiating action in selected urban areas are recommended for successful enhancement of BGI. To ensure maximum impact, there should also be a combination of bottom-up and top-down activities.
