Introduction: It has been suggested that the gut microbiome of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is unable to ferment dietary fibre. This project explored the in vitro effect of fibre fermentation on production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and on microbiome composition. Methods: Faecal samples were collected from 40 adults (>16 y) with IBD (n = 20 with Crohn’s disease and n = 20 with ulcerative colitis) in clinical remission and 20 healthy controls (HC). In vitro batch culture fermentations were carried out using as substrates maize starch, apple pectin, raftilose, wheat bran, α cellulose and a mixture of these five fibres. SCFA concentration (umol/g) was quantified with gas chromatography and microbiome was profiled with 16S rRNA sequencing. Results: Fibre fermentation did not correct the baseline microbial dysbiosis or lower diversity seen in either patients with CD or UC. For all fibres, up to 51% of baseline ASVs or genera changed in abundance in HC. In patients with IBD, fermentation of fibre substrates had no effect on species or genera abundance. Production of SCFA varied among the different fibre substrates but this was not different between the two IBD groups and compared to HC after either 5 or 24 h fermentation. Conclusions: Despite extensive microbial dysbiosis, patients with IBD have a similar capacity to ferment fibre and release SCFA as HC. Fibre supplementation alone may be unlikely to restore to a healthy status the compositional shifts characteristic of the IBD microbiome.
Objectives Periodontal disease and tooth loss were found to be associated with several peripheral vascular disorders. Nonetheless, an evaluation of the literature on the broader domains of oral health in individuals with peripheral vascular disorders is lacking. This systematic review aims to collate the current evidence on the oral health status of individuals with peripheral vascular disorders. Methods Five electronic databases were searched for studies assessing oral health parameters in individuals with peripheral vascular disorders. Outcome measures considered were periodontal health, dentition status, caries indices, oral prostheses, oral pathologies and oral hygiene behaviours. The Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used to appraise the quality of the studies. Results From 3025 records identified, 24 studies involving 1232 participants with peripheral vascular disorders were included in this review. In nine studies, periodontitis was significantly more prevalent in peripheral vascular disorders compared to non-peripheral vascular disorders participants. A further six studies reported individuals with peripheral vascular disorders also had significantly fewer teeth and increased rates of edentulism. Only one study reported a higher incidence of dental caries in peripheral vascular disorders participants. Other aspects of oral health such as oral prosthesis, oral pathology and oral hygiene behaviours were seldom assessed. Conclusions The scarcity of studies reporting on broader domains limited our ability to arrive at a conclusion regarding the oral health status of individuals with peripheral vascular disorders. Future studies ought to assess these domains in individuals with peripheral vascular disorders and controls to gain a more complete understanding of oral health and its potential association with peripheral vascular disorders.

This study investigated the efficacy of participation in culture-specific dancing to meet current physical activity recommendations and increase cardio-respiratory fitness in postmenopausal women. Sedentary postmenopausal women (n = 24), aged 63 ± 8 years and with BMI of 28 ± 3 kg/m2 completed a 4-week Scottish dancing study. The dancing sessions of approximately 75 min were performed twice a week and each session was based on five Scottish dances performed in 3 sets. Heart rate (HR) measurements were obtained during all dances to evaluate whether the intervention achieves the criteria of moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise intensity. Body composition, waist circumference, and HR during Chester Step test were measured before and after dancing intervention. HR achieved during individual dances ranged from 64 ± 5% to 80 ± 5% of HRmax and the mean HR of the five dances corresponded to 72 ± 7% of HRmax. Post-intervention mean HR was lower throughout Level 2 (Pre, 112 ± 13 bpm; Post, 106 ± 13 bpm; p = 0.005) and Level 3 (Pre, 122 ± 14 bpm; Post, 115 ± 14 bpm; p = 0.006) of the Chester test compared with baseline values. The intervention had no impact on body weight or body fat but reduced waist circumference (Pre, 94 ± 8 cm; Post, 91 ± 9 cm; p = 0.006). Thus, traditional Scottish dancing should be advocated to sedentary postmenopausal women, emphasising its potential in meeting current physical activity recommendations in relation of weekly duration and exercise intensity and improving cardiorespiratory fitness.
