A study is reported in which two components of alienation, social isolation, and powerlessness, were measured in Negro and white mothers who were medically indigent. The findings are reported and their implications for a more active, "reaching out" type of delivery of well-child services are discussed.
An interview study of 246 Negro and white mothers of children enrolled in a well-baby clinic identified deterrents to well-child supervision that were related to social and sociopsychological characteristics. The study also showed, however, that individual mothers have a consistent pattern in seeking maternal and child health care.
