The aim of the study is to assess the effect of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the wear behavior of MWCNT-doped epoxy resin. In this study, a laminating resin system designed to meet the standards for motor planes was modified with MWCNTs at mass fractions from 0.0 wt.% to 2.0 wt.%. The properties of the carbon nanotubes were determined in Raman spectroscopy and HR-TEM. An examination of wear behavior was conducted on a linear abraser with a visual inspection on an optical microscope and SEM imaging, mass loss measurement, and evaluation of the wear volume on a profilometer. Moreover, the mechanical properties of MWCNTs/epoxy nanocomposite were evaluated through a tensile test and Shore D hardness test. The study shows that the best wear resistance is achieved for the mass percentage between 0.25 wt.% and 0.5 wt.%. For the same range, the tensile strength reaches the highest values and the hardness the lowest values. Together with surface imaging and a topography analysis, this allowed describing the wear behavior in the friction node and the importance of the properties of the epoxy nanocomposite.
The aim of the study was to determine the traceability of damage growth caused by inclusions of water in the composite sandwich structure. It was assumed that as a result of temperature changes during the flight and accompanying phase transformation, the zone containing water inclusions increases. The growth is caused by the destruction (mainly the tearing of walls) of the core. As part of the work, this assumption was verified experimentally. For the experiment to be successful it was necessary to simulate actual flight conditions. The simulation involved inducing phase transformations of water in the core cell as a function of time and temperature. Before and after the experiments the non-destructive tests using pulsed thermography were performed. The test results revealed an increase in the number of cells occupied by water. Adequate specimens were designed and manufactured. The study showed that cyclical changes in temperature affected the propagation of water in core sandwich structures. Further, it was found that the increase in the surface area of water-containing inclusions could be monitored using thermographic techniques.
High specific mechanical properties of composites are the reason for their use in various fields, e.g., the aerospace industry. Mechanical joints are still used in the aerospace industry to assembly large aircraft structures. The properties of laminate around the hole can be, however, weakened, compared to their nominal values as a result of a drilling process or cyclic loading. This paper aims at the classification and analysis of imperfections affecting mechanically fastened joints in a laminate structure. A method of modeling the hole vicinity, a gradient material model, as well as the numerical and experimental estimation of laminate deterioration in this area, were proposed and analyzed. Comparative analysis of numerical and experimental results based on displacements of the testing machine grip and the extensometer length confirmed the aforementioned results as consistent in linear ranges. Therefore, joint characteristics obtained based upon measurement of the grip displacement and the ratio of stiffness in linear ranges are sufficient to determine the parameters of a gradient material model. Some imperfections resulting from, e.g., asymmetry, were included in the gradient material model; thus, the obtained weakening of laminate properties in the hole vicinity can be overestimated. Therefore, further analyses of the gradient material model for laminate structures are necessary.
