The phenoxyl radical and two of its isotopomers were investigated by UV-VIS and IR polarization spectroscopy of molecular samples immobilized in cryogenic argon matrices. Analysis of the combined electronic and infrared linear dichroism data led to determination of absolute transition moment directions and symmetry assignments for four low-lying excited electronic states. The bands observed at 16 000, 25 200, 33 900, and 41 800 cm−1 were assigned to A12, B12, A12, and B12 π–π* states, respectively. A very weak transition observed in the near-infrared close to 8900 cm−1 was assigned to an optically forbidden B22 n–π* state. The electronic transitions predicted by time dependent density functional theory (TD-UB3LYP/cc-pVTZ) were in good agreement with the observed transitions.
Multiconfigurational self-consistent field (MCSCF) response is used to study the electric field dependence of magnetizabilities and nuclear shielding constants for N2, C2H2, HCN, and H2O. London perturbation-dependent atomic orbitals are used to ensure gauge origin independence. The computed magnetizabilities and shielding derivatives show a strong electron correlation dependence. The N2 results confirm the conclusions of previous ab initio studies. For the other molecules, this is the first study of the above magnetic properties beyond the SCF approximation.
Previous histologic and phalloarteriographic studies that we have performed suggest that stenoses and occlusions of the arteries supplying the penis play a very important role in the etiology of sexual impotence in many patients. This report describes the results of direct arterial anastomosis to the cavernous bodies of the penis, using the inferior epigastric artery and microsurgical technique, in 21 impotent males ranging in age from 40 to 63 years. The objective of the operation was to increase basal penile blood flow to a level, determined by preoperative studies, just below that necessary to maintain an effective erection. A limited capacity to increase blood flow in response to an erotic stimulus could then suffice to produce an erection. The anastomosis became occluded in 6 patients, and the complication of priapism developed in 3. The bypass remained patent in 13 patients, 11 of whom experienced improved erection. Nine patients resumed normal sexual activity that, prior to operation, was impossible.
Abstract. These notes are devoted to various considerations on a family of sharp interpolation inequalities on the sphere, which in dimension two and higher interpolate between Poincaré, logarithmic Sobolev and critical Sobolev (Onofri in dimension two) inequalities. We emphasize the connexion between optimal constants and spectral properties of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the sphere. We shall address a series of related observations and give proofs based on symmetrization and the ultraspherical setting.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
