Hyper-heuristics comprise a set of approaches that are motivated (at least in part) by the goal of automating the design of heuristic methods to solve hard computational search problems. An underlying strategic research challenge is to develop more generally applicable search methodologies. The term hyper-heuristic is relatively new; it was first used in 2000 to describe heuristics to choose heuristics in the context of combinatorial optimisation. However, the idea of automating the design of heuristics is not new; it can be traced back to the 1960s. The definition of hyper-heuristics has been recently extended to refer to a search method or learning mechanism for selecting or generating heuristics to solve computational search problems. Two main hyper-heuristic categories can be considered: heuristic selection and heuristic generation. The distinguishing feature of hyper-heuristics is that they operate on a search space of heuristics (or heuristic components) rather than directly on the search space of solutions to the underlying problem that is being addressed. This paper presents a critical discussion of the scientific literature on hyper-heuristics including their origin and intellectual roots, a detailed account of the main types of approaches, and an overview of some related areas. Current research trends and directions for future research are also discussed.
A number of technological advances have led to a renewed interest on dynamic vehicle routing problems. This survey classifies routing problems from the perspective of information quality and evolution. After presenting a general description of dynamic routing, we introduce the notion of degree of dynamism, and present a comprehensive review of applications and solution methods for dynamic vehicle routing problems.
We propose an algorithmic framework that successfully addresses three vehicle routing problems: the multidepot VRP, the periodic VRP, and the multidepot periodic VRP with capacitated vehicles and constrained route duration. The metaheuristic combines the exploration breadth of population-based evolutionary search, the aggressive-improvement capabilities of neighborhood-based metaheuristics, and advanced population-diversity management schemes. Extensive computational experiments show that the method performs impressively in terms of computational efficiency and solution quality, identifying either the best known solutions, including the optimal ones, or new best solutions for all currently available benchmark instances for the three problem classes. The proposed method also proves extremely competitive for the capacitated VRP.
Most of the models for vehicle routing reported in the literature assume constant travel times. Clearly, ignoring the fact that the travel time between two locations does not depend only on the distance traveled, but on many other factors including the time of the day, impact the application of these models to real-world problems. In this paper, we present a model based on time-dependent travel speeds which satisfies the ''first-in-first-out'' property. An experimental evaluation of the proposed model is performed in a static and a dynamic setting, using a parallel tabu search heuristic. It is shown that the time-dependent model provides substantial improvements over a model based on fixed travel times.
