The World Heritage List was created as a result of the need to protect and conserve cultural and natural heritage. The Ohrid region is one of only 28 sites on UNESCO’s World Heritage List that are both cultural and natural sites. Ohrid is one of the oldest human settlements in Europe, boasting exquisite medieval religious architecture, as well as urban architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries. The site of Plaošnik is a large archaeological and historic location in Ohrid’s old town that witnessed all cultural eras from prehistory to Ottoman, but most importantly it was the location of the oldest Slavic monastery and the first Slavic University in the Balkans. In 2007, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Macedonia prepared a controversial plan of activities for the instauration of St. Clement’s University at Plaošnik. The main interest of this study is the position of cultural heritage in the evolution of a town, and the treatment of heritage in this process, shown through the case of Plaošnik; it focuses on the influence of pressure for (re)development projects on the key elements of an area recognized by the World Heritage List, as well as the influence of the World Heritage List, as an international legal instrument, on the preservation of these features.
The emergence of spa tourism as a sector of the wellness tourism marketplace is reflected in contemporary architecture of spa hotels. These facilities are essentially accommodation facilities that offer a variety of individual treatments and services for spaseeking tourists focused on their health and wellness. The primary objective of the research is to investigate current tendencies and strategies in the field of architectural design of spa hotels, as well as to explore successful design approaches. The research begins with elaboration of basic characteristics of modern wellness tourism, followed by the definition of spa hotel as a special type of hospitality facility. Later, classification of modern spa hotel modalities is elaborated and further clarified using relevant case studies. The second part of the research is the analysis of recognized design tendencies in terms of spatial organization of spa hotels. In the conclusion, their further applicability in wider practice is discussed, and certain disadvantages and limitations are listed.
Creating a healthy environment for preschool children in kindergartens is about providing fundamental spatial comfort, a comprehensive program and conceptual adaptation of both inner and outer space. The aim of this study was to investigate the interactivity aspect of preschool children facilities in Niš, Serbia, with the emphasis on a space as its determinant. As the most important aspects of spatial interactivity, which should be improved, this research recognized open spaces and space for play, improvement of existing classrooms and multifunctional spaces. A horizontal (creating of activity pockets using mobile elements and custom-made furniture) and vertical (introduction of galleries for sleeping) spatial differentiation of existing playrooms is recommended as central activity. Our results imply that a transformation of existing multipurpose spaces into an extension of the surrounding playrooms could contribute to the space quality, and result in diverse learning environment oriented toward active and self-learning.
