Nasal secretions of volunteers colonized by N. lactamica impaired the attachment of N. lactamica and of meningococci of groups A and B to oroepithelial cells. Bacterial adherence was found to be mediated by nonpiliated adhesins with antigen(s) which probably are shared by the strains tested. Although a strong attachment-inhibiting activity arises in their nasal secretions, volunteers remained colonized by N. lactamica. This evidence suggest that the eradication of Neisseria carriage is a multifactorial event.
ABSTRACT. H OST INFLUENCE ON TII E POPULATI ON PROFILE ANO ON TIiE CILlATEPOPULA TIONS OF THE S OVINE RUMEN. The influence oflhe hOSI on the population profile and on the ciliate populations of lhe bovine rumen was investigated using three suckling crossbred friesian-zebu (G ir) cows, with fistulas. The genera of ciliate observed in the three hosls exami ned have characterized the populations as type A. The occurrence ofthe genera ofciliate was related to lhe host. lt was verified that the rumen ciliate were quantitatively influenced by inherent facto rs in lhe hosl animais, showing a significant diJTerence in the total of ciliale among the hosts in ali stages of lhe experiment. KEY WORDS.
