A 29-year-old woman presented with bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute renal failure. She was diagnosed with Escherichia coli O104:H4-associated hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) and treated with plasmapheresis and hemodialysis for 3 weeks. She recovered without sequelae. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of Escherichia coli O104:H4-associated HUS in Korea. We recommend that Escherichia coli O104:H4, as well as the more common O157:H7, be considered in the diagnosis of bloody diarrhea-associated HUS.
Soil nutrient management is important to maintain the constant productivity of seedling production in the nursery for successful forest restoration. This study investigated the effects of organic manure and chemical fertilizer application levels on the growth, soil properties, and nutrient concentrations of yellow poplar seedlings. One-year-old yellow poplar seedlings were treated with the combination of 3 level organic manures(0, 5 Mg/ha, 10 Mg/ha; mixture of poultry manure, cattle manure, swine * 본 연구는 산림청 '산림과학기술개발사업(과제번호: S211414L010100)' 및 충남대학교 연구비 지원을 받아 일부 수행되 었습니다.
BackgroundAlthough the introduction of novel agents improved the survival outcomes in patients with multiple myeloma (MM), some patients died within one year (early mortality, EM) following diagnosis. In this study, we evaluated the EM rate, and investigated the risk factors associated with EM in MM patients.MethodsRetrospective data from 542 patients who were initially treated with a novel agent-containing regimen were analyzed.ResultsThe median overall survival (OS) for the entire cohort was 56.5 months. The median OS in the 2010–2014 group was longer than in the 2002–2009 group (59.2 months vs. 49.1 months, P = 0.054). The rate of EM was 13.8 %, and the most common causes of EM were infection and comorbidity. In multivariate analysis, the age-adjusted Charlson comorbidity index (ACCI ≥ 4), low body mass index (BMI < 20 kg/m2), thrombocytopenia, and renal failure were significantly associated with EM. The presence of none, 1, or ≥ 2 factors was associated with a 4.1 %, 14.3 %, or 27.4 % risk of EM (P < 0.001), respectively. The median OS times were significantly different depending on the presence of factors associated with EM (P < 0.001).ConclusionsIn conclusion, the ACCI (≥ 4), low BMI, thrombocytopenia and renal failure were strong predictors for EM in the novel agent era. The results of this study will help to identify patients at high risk for EM, and may be helpful to more accurately predict prognosis of MM patients in the novel-agent era.
The aim of the present study was to develop a noble and specific marker for a quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the species-specific detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa based on the O-antigen acetylase gene. It is an important challenge to characterize populations of the bacterium P. aeruginosa, an opportunist by virtue of its physiological and genetic adaptability. However, molecular and serological methods currently available for sensitive and specific detection of P. aeruginosa are by no means satisfactory because there have been critical defects in the diagnosis and identification of P. aeruginosa strains in that these assays also detect other Pseudomonas species, or do not obtain amplified products from P. aeruginosa strains. Therefore, a primer set was designed based on the O-antigen acetylase gene of P. aeruginosa PA01 because it has been known that this gene is structurally diverse among species. The specificity of the primer set was evaluated using genomic DNA from six isolates of P. aeruginosa, 18 different species of Pseudomonas, and 23 other reference pathogenic bacteria. The primer set used in the PCR assay amplified a 232-bp amplicon for only six P. aeruginosa strains. The assay was also able to detect at least 1.41 × 10(3) copies/μl of cloned amplified target DNA using purified DNA, or 2.7 × 10(2) colony-forming unit per reaction when using calibrated cell suspension. In conclusion, this assay can be applied as a practical diagnostic method for epidemiological research and the sanitary management of water with a low level or latent infection of P. aeruginosa.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
