The growing environmental awareness among tourists, governments and other bodies, the sustainability of resources, waste management and the greening of hotels have resulted in waste becoming a critical issue for the industry. Waste disposal and its regulation are both important and complex in Egypt and as a result the Law 4 / 1994 for the Protection of the Environment was enforced. This study aimed to investigate the weight of solid waste produced by fi ve star hotels in Cairo and to identify whether this weight complies with international standard benchmarks. Questionnaires were distributed to hotel executives responsible for monitoring waste management programmes. It was found that since 1994 hotels have started some successful waste management practices. However the weight of the waste produced by a number of hotels still exceeds the international benchmarks. A recommendation is that existing legislation needs to be amended to further both environmental and waste management practices.
The human consequences of occupational accidents in Algeria are multiples of their action on the profitability and the added value, knowing that the company is the employee's home and the damage of each may affect the whole. Moreover, understanding and applying concepts of risk management in their Anglo-Saxon sense is completely absent in our companies. Preventive measures are still insufficient, especially for the protection of workers who are often left on their own. This results in an uneven maturity of companies, different strategies considered and dissimilar organizational choices. Of the more than 50,000 accidents/year that have been recorded in Algerian companies, between 750 and 800 of those accidents have caused deaths. The number of days lost that are automatically compensated is 14 10 5
In Algeria, the human consequences of occupational accidents -on the profi tability and the added value -are many, knowing that a company is the employee's home and the damage of each may affect them as an entire body. Moreover, understanding and applying concepts of risk management in the Anglo-Saxon spirit is a completely absent approach in our companies. Preventive measures are still insuffi cient, especially for the protection of workers who are often left to their own. This leads to an uneven maturity of companies, different strategies considered and dissimilar organizational choices. More than 50,000 accidents/year were recorded in the Algerian companies, between 750 and 800 of those accidents have caused deaths. The number of days lost that are automatically compensated is estimated to 14×10 5 . These costs are exorbitant for the whole society and even more so for the companies themselves (the continuing rise of absenteeism, disruption of ongoing work and lost production, etc.). Conscious of the importance of the industrial safety control for the future of our industrial heritage, we covet raise employees and employers awareness on the importance of all issues induced by the technological risks within companies. Everything has to be done in order to avoid an accident, which breaks or handicap a human life. Instantly, everything has to be done to ensure how to provide occupational health and make the industrial action daily to ensure the safety of its personnel in different companies or even in each workplace. Thus, a permanent anticipation of work accidents and occupational diseases can therefore be reached and to develop a permanent and sustainable culture of prevention in companies. Therefore, continuous improvement and permanent safety of health and protection of the employee is imposed and becomes a common goal. So, we hope that prevention is on the agenda of each employer, each worker, all employers' associations, trade unions and professional organizations.Safety and health at work should be seen as a tool for productivity and economic asset. Only in that way, individually and collectively the risks can be controlled and the source of dangers can be eliminated for health, safety and physical integrity of workers, while relying on the general principles of prevention: The health in the company is the health of the company.Henceforth, legislation is essential but not suffi cient to cope with these changes or to stay abreast of new risks. Therefore, companies especially those at high risk such as oil and cement industries must be able to identify risks and to fi ght against the problems arising in terms of safety and health at work and respond effectively in dynamic management strategies. We covet through this paper, guide and educate those concerned (state, employers and employees) of the austerity of industrial hygiene and safety within our companies. Thus, arrive at implemented priority actions of relevant preventions, improving the quality of life at work and the same improving industrial performanc...
Research into environmental management systems (EMSs) began in the late 1990s with studies that focused on the driving forces, costs and benefits and nature of such systems. However, very little research has been done to investigate the attitude of hotels stakeholders towards such systems. In recognition of this gap, this research studies the attitude of both: customers and employees -as two main stakeholders-towards EMSs in the Egyptian industry. A single case study design, in which a mixed methodology of both quantitative and qualitative approaches, was employed to fulfill the research objectives. Semi-structured interviews with three levels of employeesexecutive, supervisory and general and a structured questionnaire distributed to the hotel customers were employed as data collection tools. The findings revealed that customers have a positive attitude towards environment. However, despite this positive attitude, findings revealed that there is no significant relationship between customer attitude towards environment and their willingness to pay. Findings, also, provided some significant contributors that boost the positive attitude of customers towards green practices in hotels. From the employees' perspective, results indicated that commitment to the EMS is negatively affected if the adoption of the system by the company was perceived to be merely a means to save costs, improve company image and attract green customers. The study provides valuable insights to help hotels managers design their own strategies and policies which entails most of the environment related attributes which the customers and employees alike are concerned with. Knowing these attributes would enable hotels attract more segments of customers and increases their market share.
