AIM: This study is a prospective cohort study aimed to assess the effect of systemic corticosteroids administration time in the recovery of gustatory and olfactory sensations dysfunction (ageusia and anosmia) in COVID-19 patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-seven COVID-19 patients with symptoms of ageusia and anosmia were recruited (that their COVID infection was confirmed using polymerase chain reaction). Daily 10 mg of systemic corticosteroids were prescribed in the 1st week and then reduced to 5 mg in the 2nd week to all the patients to observe taste and smell sensation recovery. All data were recorded and then analyzed. Patients were then grouped into two groups (early and late groups) according to the duration of their taste and smell dysfunction.
RESULTS: Regression analysis showed that early corticosteroid administration resulted in a significant decrease in recovery time of ageusia and anosmia (0.27 [0.2–0.35], p < 0.001). Patients in the early administration group (<1 week) showed faster improvement in regaining taste and smell functions than in the late administration group (>1 week) with significant difference (p < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONS: The use of systemic corticosteroids in early phases of covid-19 infection help in faster recovery of ageusia and anosmia.
Introduction: coronavirus disease-2019 (Covid-19) cases were increasing a while ago with rising in morbidity and mortality rates. severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infected patients have many variant presentations from asymptomatic up to severe acute respiratory syndrome. Objective: The aim of this work was a trial of early diagnosis of mucormycosis in covid-19 patients that need ICU admission using CT scan and histopathology. Materials and methods: This prospective study was carried out on 64 patients with covid-19 who received steroid therapy. All patients were subjected to computerized tomography scan on the nose and paranasal sinuses, request for ophthalmology and neurology for further assessment and extension of complications, surgical debridement of necrosed tissue (when patients fit for surgery), histopathology, confirming the diagnosis of mucormycosis. Results: Duration between covid infection and mucormycosis infection was ≤15 days in 17 patients (26.6%), more than 2 weeks up-to 4weeks (one month) in 45 patients (70.3%), and two months in 2 (3.1%). Conclusions: The incidence of mucormycosis is likely to rise, both as a co‑infection and as a sequela of COVID‑19. Early diagnosis and management with appropriate and aggressive antifungals and surgical debridement can improve survival.
Background
The study aimed to assess oropharyngeal and otorhinolaryngological changes in end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing hemodialysis and correlate the findings to renal functions.
Material and Methods
This case-control study compared oral and otorhinolaryngological findings in 85 patients with (ESRD) on maintenance hemodialysis to age and sex matched 85 healthy controls. Frequencies of findings were calculated and compared and correlation between biochemical and the oral health parameters in case group was determined using T-test, chi-square and Pearson correlation test (significance were set at

Results
The frequency of oral signs and mucosal symptoms were significantly higher among ESRD compared to healthy controls. Dry mouth (34.12%), bad odour (32.94%), increased tongue coating (50.59%) and pale mucosa (45.88%) were the most commonly reported. Otorhinolaryngological findings was higher in cases than in controls, with otomycosis (10.59%) and allergic rhinitis (5.88%) being the most frequent findings. Serum creatinine and blood urea mean levels were higher in ESRD patients with oral and otorhinolaryngological findings compared to those without findings.
Conclusions
Oral and nasal manifestations in patients with ESRD on maintenance hemodialysis were significantly higher in comparison to healthy individuals and were related to their serum creatinine and blood urea mean levels.
