Considering the importance of conservation and in recognition of historical places we are going to explain the potential of revitalization of Meymand, while presenting its architecture in generalities. These potentials will be examined in a rural and single-unit architecture scale through applying models.This case study has been made as a field study report. Using previous studies available in Meymand's cultural heritage base archive, interviewing different people, taking photographs, collecting related information from the village, and processing and gathering them, have been done in order to conduct this study.The whole fabric of Meymand has been examined with regard to general characteristics, understanding different periods of development, and components and elements of the units. The only way to revitalize this village in a correct way is to recover its proper economy and to restore all of its residential units and its past culture in a new form. Reorganizing the fabric of Meymand depends on solving the problems related to its fabric with the least intervention.
Rock-cut architecture is an essential yet little-known type of vernacular architecture whose nature is different from what we understand by the term “architecture”. This research seeks to answer the question of which technics, designs and digging procedures have been applied in this type of vernacular architecture. Out of the 300 rock-cut buildings and complexes found in Iran, nearly 70 were functionally assessed. Ten complexes were found to serve residential functions in different climates. Technique, type and the settlement context material were also briefly compared and contrasted, and thus, three general excavation techniques were recognized. The largest rock-cut residential complex in Iran, Meymand, was selected as the main case study. Fifty residential units in the oldest part of the village in two regions on both sides of the main valley were studied in terms of technique and design style. They were also compared and contrasted. The quantitative data obtained in this section were compared and contrasted using the descriptive statistical method. Although the rock-cut buildings are dispersed throughout Iran, three main techniques were employed to excavate them. Most of them were excavated using two or three of the said techniques. Application of the fine technique and the size of the particles constituting the settlement context are the two factors determining the quality of excavation. The findings in the area of special climatic design standards and technologies not only give us a better insight into rock-cut architecture but also contribute to setting some standards for design and construction of rock-cut buildings in the present era.
Considering the importance of the conservation and restoration of historical places this study aims to investigate the general urbanism and the sustainable features of Marvast fabric in order to achieve a sustainable development procedure.This case study was conducted as a field study by using previous studies, interviewing different people, taking photographs, collecting related information from the real place, and processing the collected information.The whole fabric of Marvast was examined in terms of its sustainable development, the influential factors in its formation and its historical structure. Geomorphology, water resources and the way to access them, and continental elements are the factors that have influenced the formation of Marvast.The only way for appropriate reconstruction of Marvast is the restoration of its sustainable economy along with repairing the residential and other culturally valuable buildings in a new form. Organizing Marvast fabric requires addressing its fabric-related problems with the minimum interventions. Continuing architectural studies and updating the designs based on the latest studies are also recommended.
