The transformation of camel milk into soft cheese by using chymosin and yoghurt starter culture (Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus) was investigated. The cheese yield and sensory properties were related to the concentration of chymosin. A yield of 16.74 g/100 mL of milk was obtained with a chymosin concentration of 1.7 mL/L of milk. The cheeses obtained with concentrations ranging between 1.0 mL and 2.9 mL of chymosin/L of milk scored highly regarding their sensory properties and had an acceptable microbiological quality. This study demonstrated that cheesemaking from camel milk can be made successfully providing that the appropriate chymosin concentration is used; and that 1.7 mL of chymosin/L of milk was optimal.
To evaluate the humoral immune response to mixed Equine Influenza vaccination, a common practice in the field, an experimental study was carried out on 42 unvaccinated thoroughbred weanling foals divided into six groups of seven. Three groups were vaccinated using a non-mixed protocol (Equilis® Prequenza-Te, Proteqflu-Te® or Calvenza-03®) and three other groups were vaccinated using a mix of the three vaccines mentioned previously. Each weanling underwent a primary EI vaccination schedule composed of two primary immunisations (V1 and V2) four weeks apart followed by a third boost immunisation (V3) six months later. Antibody responses were monitored until one-year post-V3 by single radial haemolysis (SRH). The results showed similar antibody responses for all groups using mixed EI vaccination and the group exclusively vaccinated with Equilis® Prequenza-TE, which were significantly higher than the other two groups vaccinated with Proteqflu-TE® and Calvenza-03®. All weanlings (100%) failed to seroconvert after V1 and 21% (9/42) still had low or no SRH antibody titres two weeks post-V2. All weanlings had seroconverted and exceeded the clinical protection threshold one month after V3. The poor response to vaccination was primarily observed in groups exclusively vaccinated with Proteqflu-Te® and Calvenza-03®. A large window of susceptibility (3–4.5-month duration) usually called immunity gap was observed after V2 and prior to V3 for all groups. The SRH antibody level was maintained above the clinical protection threshold for three months post-V3 for the groups exclusively vaccinated with Proteqflu-Te® and Calvenza-03®, and six months to one year for groups using mixed EI vaccination or exclusively vaccinated with Equilis® Prequenza-Te. This study demonstrates for the first time that the mix of EI vaccines during the primary vaccination schedule has no detrimental impact on the correlate of protection against EIV infection.
Abstract:A new flammability index (FI) was developed, which integrated two parameters that are highly correlated to fuel moisture content (MC). These parameters are time-to-ignition and flame height. The newly obtained FI-values belong to the variation interval of {0; 20}. In addition to the six flammability classes defined in the earlier work, a seventh class (FI > 16.5) was proposed to include fuel species with a high content of volatile flammable-compounds. Flammability testing and MC measurement were performed at a range of MC obtained through a drying process of samples. As a result, FI was statistically highly correlated with MC for all 13 Moroccan forest fuels tested in this study. Following this, linear regression equations were established to predict the FI-value as a function of MC. Therefore, the classification of flammability would depend on the species as well as the MC-value of the samples and the season in which they were collected.
Literature on the drivers of environmental technology has been increasing in recent years. However, few studies analyze the issue in developing countries. The main goals of understanding the drivers of, and obstacles to the ecological decisions made by firms, are to design efficient environmental regulatory instruments to achieve the environmental targets. This article analyzes the determinants, including the effects of environmental regulations, of the environmental technology adoption and improvement of environmental performance in the olive oil industry in managing the olive mills wastewater (OMWW). To meet our research objective, we applied a two-stage Heckman probit model to the data collected from 156 olive oil producers in three Moroccan provinces known by a high concentration of olive oil production activity. Our results showed that the environmental regulation is one main determinant of the adoption of environmental technology by olive oil producers. However, our findings indicate that the environmental regulation, as currently designed, is not strict enough to encourage producers to improve their environmental performance in the developmental context of this particular country. The conclusions of this research also suggest that the environmental performance of oil mills, while not explained by the severity of the environmental regulation, are influenced by other external and internal factors. On the one hand, the influence of the external environment of firms via the effect of external collaboration and international market orientation, and, on the other hand by internal factors related to environmental awareness of the producer and the firm’s technical competency. In the light of our findings, we recommend to the policy makers to carry out a reform of the regulatory measures through: (i) the implementation of the current legislation, (ii) designing an effective incentive system, combining better targeted green subsidy with an optimal tax on industrial wastewater discharge (iii) setting up programs to raise awareness and reinforce technical capacities.
