ABSTRACTThis study aimed to identify the perceptions of Family Health Strategy nurses about the meaning of homoaffective family and the need for family planning in homosexual couples. This is descriptive qualitative research conducted with primary health care nurses in the municipality of Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará, Brazil. We used the technique of semi-structured interviews for data collection. The discourse was organized according to Bardin's principles of content analysis and analyzed according to Social Representation Theory and relevant literature. It was found that the family planning program activities are aimed at a set of ideas about family that does not address the needs of gay couples, as a result of prejudice and discrimination. Evident as well is the lack of preparation for dealing with some of the specifics of homo-affective unions, which is reflected in attention that does not strengthen the bond and the longitudinality of assistance. Heteronormativity in the context of health care still represents a strong influence on care, and often during Family Health Strategy program activities, including the Family Planning Program, discriminatory attitudes of nurses based on the user's sexual orientation become evident, and in such cases increases susceptibility to diseases.
