Livestock keeping is critical for many of the poor in the developing world, often contributing to multiple livelihood objectives and offering pathways out of poverty. Livestock keeping also affects an indispensable asset of the poor, their human capital, through its impact on their own nutrition and health. This paper outlines the linkages between livestock keeping and the physical well-being of the poor, and examines a number of commonly held beliefs that misrepresent livestock development issues related to these linkages. These beliefs limit the scope of intervention programs to promote livestock and limit their potential contribution to poverty reduction. Recognition of the complexity of the role livestock play in household decision-making and of the opportunities foregone due to these misconceptions can enhance the ability of livestock to contribute to human well-being in the developing world.

Animals obtained heavier bites in tall sparse swards than on short dense ones of equal mass/area. Even in homogeneous swards, both density and height are necessary to predict bite weight. AbstractEffects of sward height and density on the dimensions and weights of bites taken by cattle were examined. In one experiment, swards of dallisgrass lamina were constructed by hand in a factorial combination of four heights (80, 150, 180 and 300 mm) and three densities (c. 700, 1500 and 2700 g m" ^). In the other, swards of lucerne were constructed in a factorial combination of three heights (70, 150 and 250 mm) and three densities (1500, 2800 and 5900 g m"^). Treatments were replicated on three steers of 750 kg average weight. The first six bites taken from the sward were monitored, and functional relationships between sward characteristics and bite dimensions derived. Results from both experiments were similar. Average bite area was not constant as often assumed, but decreased linearly with density and increased quadratically with height, with slope negatively affected by density and height. In tail swards, bite area reached a plateau of c. 170 cm^, determined by the sweep of the tongue. In contrast with the widely used model, bite depth increased linearly with height, with slope negatively affected by density. A previous longitudinal three-country study in Egypt, Kenya and Mexico found significant positive associations between intake of animal source foods (ASF) and growth, cognitive development and physical activity. To test for a causal relationship, a controlled school feeding intervention study was designed to test the hypotheses that ASF would improve micronutrient status, growth and cognitive function in Kenyan primary school children. Twelve rural Kenyan schools with 554 children were randomized to four feeding interventions using a local vegetable stew as the vehicle. The groups were designated as Meat, Milk, Energy and Control, who received no feedings. Feeding was carried out on school days for seven terms during 21 mo. Preintervention baseline measures included nutritional status, home food intake, anthropometry, biochemical measures of micronutrient status, malaria, intestinal parasites, health status and cognitive and behavioral measures. The measurements of each child were repeated at intervals over 2 y. Baseline data revealed stunting and underweight in approximately 30% of children and widespread inadequate intakes and/or biochemical evidence of micronutrient deficiencies, particularly of iron, zinc, vitamins A and B-12, riboflavin and calcium. Little or no ASF were eaten and fat intake was low. Malaria was present in 31% of children, and hookworm, amebiasis and giardia were widely prevalent. The outcomes measured were rates of change or increase during the intervention in cognitive function, growth, physical activity and behavior and micronutrient status. Hierarchical linear random effects modeling was used for analysis of outcomes.
Objective: The purpose of the present study was to test the construct validity, internal consistency and convergent validity of the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) in measuring household food insecurity in rural Tanzania, and to determine socio-economic characteristics associated with household food insecurity. Design: Key informant interviews and a cross-sectional survey were conducted in February and March 2008. Setting: Rural Iringa, Tanzania. Subjects: Key informant interviews were conducted with twenty-one purposively selected male and female village leaders. For the household surveys, a sample of 237 households with mothers (caregivers) and at least one child between 1 and 5 years of age were included.Results: Approximately 20?7 % of the households were categorized as foodsecure, 8?4 % as mildly food-insecure, 22?8 % as moderately food-secure and 48?1 % as severely food-insecure. Two main factors emerged from the rotated principal component factor analysis: (i) insufficient food quality; and (ii) insufficient food intake. Both factors explained 69 % of the total variance. The full food insecurity scale and the two subscales had good internal consistency (Cronbach's a 5 0?83-0?90). Food security, as measured by HFIAS, was positively associated with maternal education, husband's education, household wealth status, being of an agricultural rather than pastoral tribe and animal-source food consumption; it was negatively associated with maternal age and household size. Conclusions: The HFIAS measurement instrument shows validity and reliability in measuring household food insecurity among poor households in rural Tanzania.
