The number of workers using computers away from the office is increasing, particularly for engineers, accountants, salesmen and consultants, and those called nomadic users. The increasing use necessitates the need for security considerations by the users and their supervisors. Companies’ sensitive data are usually available on the mobile computers. Therefore, serious consideration must be given to the security aspect of these mobile computers. Data security involves considering issues of integrity, availability and confidentiality. The type of organization, the acceptability of restrictions on the users, the risk involved and the cost of the security are some of the factors that need serious attention when discussing security for mobile computers. We propose minimum security measures taking into account the minimum security needs already identified. Various situations were examined to determine the appropriate measures applicable to each of them. Principal requirements for security solutions such as implementing software‐base access control at the beginning of the hard disk and the role of encryption were also discussed.
The paper discusses the relationship among information, knowledge and technology management, with special emphasis on their applications in developing economies and how they relate to sustainable development. It also discusses the role of the national Information Technology (IT) policies in providing enabling environments for Knowledge Management (KM) for sustainable development. Finally, the paper appraises the national IT policies in two African countries (Nigeria and Ethiopia) to further provide insight into the provision of enabling environment that can lead to the process of KM for sustainable development.Reference to this paper should be made as follows: Badamas, M.A. (2009) 'Information, knowledge and technology management: national information technology policies for sustainable development', Int.
Information technology professionals develop procedures that the information systems are based on and the end-users are trained to use the information systems. There is often great tension between information technology professionals and the end-user population. Sometimes users do not understand IT, and IT professionals feel relegated to the background. This study is to examine the relationships of non-IT executives, end-users and IT executives and their staff, and the attitudes of both groups that affect the corporate environment within which IS contributes to the strategic development of the organisation.
