Globally, coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has badly affected the medical system and economy. Sometimes, the deadly COVID-19 has the same symptoms as other chest diseases such as pneumonia and lungs cancer and can mislead the doctors in diagnosing coronavirus. Frontline doctors and researchers are working assiduously in finding the rapid and automatic process for the detection of COVID-19 at the initial stage, to save human lives. However, the clinical diagnosis of COVID-19 is highly subjective and variable. The objective of this study is to implement a multi-classification algorithm based on deep learning (DL) model for identifying the COVID-19, pneumonia, and lung cancer diseases from chest radiographs. In the present study, we have proposed a model with the combination of Vgg-19 and convolutional neural networks (CNN) named BDCNet and applied it on different publically available benchmark databases to diagnose the COVID-19 and other chest tract diseases. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to diagnose the three chest diseases in a single deep learning model. We also computed and compared the classification accuracy of our proposed model with four well-known pre-trained models such as ResNet-50, Vgg-16, Vgg-19, and inception v3. Our proposed model achieved an AUC of 0.9833 (with an accuracy of 99.10%, a recall of 98.31%, a precision of 99.9%, and an f1-score of 99.09%) in classifying the different chest diseases. Moreover, CNN-based pre-trained models VGG-16, VGG-19, ResNet-50, and Inception-v3 achieved an accuracy of classifying multi-diseases are 97.35%, 97.14%, 97.15%, and 95.10%, respectively. The results revealed that our proposed model produced a remarkable performance as compared to its competitor approaches, thus providing significant assistance to diagnostic radiographers and health experts.
Thalassemia is viewed as a prevalent inherited blood disease that has gotten exorbitant consideration in the field of medical research around the world. Inherited diseases have a high risk that children will get these diseases from their parents. If both the parents are β-Thalassemia carriers then there are 25% chances that each child will have β-Thalassemia intermediate or β-Thalassemia major, which in most of its cases leads to death. Prenatal screening after counseling of couples is an effective way to control β-Thalassemia. Generally, identification of the Thalassemia carriers is performed by some quantifiable blood traits determined effectively by high-performance-liquid-chromatography (HPLC) test, which is costly, time-consuming, and requires specialized equipment. However, cost-effective and rapid screening techniques need to be devised for this problem. This study aims to detect β-Thalassemia carriers by evaluating red blood cell indices from the complete-blood-count test. The present study included Punjab Thalassemia Prevention Project Lab Reports dataset. The proposed SGR-VC is an ensemble of three machine learning algorithms: Support Vector Machine, Gradient Boosting Machine, and Random Forest. Comparative analysis proved that the proposed ensemble model using all indices of red blood cells is very effective in β-Thalassemia carrier screening with 93% accuracy.
The Internet Movie Database (IMDb), being one of the popular online databases for movies and personalities, provides a wide range of movie reviews from millions of users. This provides a diverse and large dataset to analyze users’ sentiments about various personalities and movies. Despite being helpful to provide the critique of movies, the reviews on IMDb cannot be read as a whole and requires automated tools to provide insights on the sentiments in such reviews. This study provides the implementation of various machine learning models to measure the polarity of the sentiments presented in user reviews on the IMDb website. For this purpose, the reviews are first preprocessed to remove redundant information and noise, and then various classification models like support vector machines (SVM), Naïve Bayes classifier, random forest, and gradient boosting classifiers are used to predict the sentiment of these reviews. The objective is to find the optimal process and approach to attain the highest accuracy with the best generalization. Various feature engineering approaches such as term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF), bag of words, global vectors for word representations, and Word2Vec are applied along with the hyperparameter tuning of the classification models to enhance the classification accuracy. Experimental results indicate that the SVM obtains the highest accuracy when used with TF-IDF features and achieves an accuracy of 89.55%. The sentiment classification accuracy of the models is affected due to the contradictions in the user sentiments in the reviews and assigned labels. For tackling this issue, TextBlob is used to assign a sentiment to the dataset containing reviews before it can be used for training. Experimental results on TextBlob assigned sentiments indicate that an accuracy of 92% can be obtained using the proposed model.
Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurological brain disorder marked by dementia and neurological dysfunction that affects memory, behavioral patterns, and reasoning. Alzheimer's disease is an incurable disease that primarily affects people over the age of 40. Presently, Alzheimer's disease is diagnosed through a manual evaluation of a patient's MRI scan and neuropsychological examinations. Deep Learning (DL), a type of Artificial Intelligence (AI), has pioneered new approaches to automate medical image diagnosis. The goal of this study is to create a reliable and efficient approach for classifying AD using MRI by applying the deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). In this paper, we propose a new CNN architecture for detecting AD with relatively few parameters and the proposed solution is ideal for training a smaller dataset. This proposed model successfully distinguishes the early stages of Alzheimer's disease and shows class activation maps as a heat map on the brain. The proposed Alzheimer's Disease Detection Network (ADD-Net) is built from scratch to precisely classify the stages of AD by decreasing parameters and calculation costs. The Kaggle MRI image dataset has a significant class imbalance problem and we exploited a synthetic oversampling technique to evenly distribute the image among the classes to prevent the problem of class imbalance. The proposed ADD-Net is extensively evaluated against DenseNet169, VGG19, and InceptionResNet V2 using precision, recall, F1-score, Area Under the Curve (AUC), and loss. The ADD-Net achieved the following values for evaluation metrics: 98.63%, 99.76%, 98.61%, 98.63%, 98.58%, and 0.0549 for accuracy, AUC, F1-score, precision, recall, and loss, respectively. From the simulation results, it is noted that the proposed ADD-Net outperforms other state-of-the-art models in all the evaluation metrics.
