ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: N-Vinylcarbazol wurde in flussigem Schwefeldioxid ohne Katalysator bei -15 "C polymerisiert. Die Elementaranalyse sowie das IR-Spektrum des Polymeren zeigen, daB das Produkt, unabhangig vom Umsatz, ein Homopolymeres ist. Als Erkliirung hierfiir wird die Bildung eines Komplexes aus N-Vinylcarbazol und Schwefeldioxid vor der Startreaktion angenommen. Dieser Komplex polymerisiert dann ionisch. SUMMARY:N-Vinylcarbazole was polymerized in liquid sulfur diexide a t a temperature of -15 "C. without catalysts. The elemental analysis and the I R spectrum of polymer obtained showed that the product is a homopolymer of N-vinylcarbazole, irrespective of the conversion. As explanation for the formation of the polymer it is stated that a complex of N-vinylcarbazole and sulfur diexide was formed before the initiation reaction and that this complex underwent a polymerisation by an ionic mechanism.
