Background The potential of COVID-19 severe pandemic necessitates the development of an organized and well-reasoned plan for the management of embryology/andrology laboratories while safeguarding the wellbeing of patients and IVF staff. Main body A COVID-19 pandemic response plan was proposed for embryology and andrology laboratories for pre-pandemic preparedness and pandemic management in anticipation of a possible second coronavirus wave. Preparation involves many plans and logistics before a pandemic risk rises. Many operational changes can be considered during the pandemic. This plan includes logistical arrangements, reducing labor needs, conserving supplies, and protective measures for embryologists and gametes/embryos. Conclusion The unpredictable emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic dictates the need for a preparedness plan for embryology/andrology laboratories, which includes an action-oriented plan to secure the safety of all stakeholders.
Background The embryology laboratory remains one of the primary factors influencing the overall performance of the IVF clinic. Clinical embryology, however, has undergone remarkable advancements over the last decade. These developments in both practice and education have been driven together by science and technology. Main body The changes in clinical embryology practice have created a significant challenge for both the profession and the embryologist. New competencies for embryologists have subsequently emerged to provide and manage high-quality services for their patients and clinics. Embryologists’ efficacy behind the scenes reflects positively on the success of the fertility clinic. This framework will serve as the flagship document to shed light on the often-overlooked value of the embryologist as an intellectual and intangible asset for the clinic. Conclusion To fully leverage a modern embryologist’s skill set, significant investment is required from the IVF clinics’ leadership, which is associated with a substantial return on the IVF clinic’s success. From their side, embryologists should be up to date on further developments and innovations. On the other hand, mentors need to mend the curriculum to allow for better training of high-caliber embryologists.
Background Considerable attention is being directed nowadays towards using probiotics as an alternative therapy in treating several human diseases including gastrointestinal tract diseases especially colorectal cancers, cardiovascular diseases, hyperlipidemia, and blood pressure cases. However, infertility as affected by the microbiome and the probable role of probiotics in alleviating infertility problems did not receive the deserved attention, especially in IVF patients with male or female factors. Main body In this review, we tried to draw the attention of researchers in the medical settings to the importance of the forthcoming role of probiotics use in elucidating the role of the microbiome in infertile patients. The hope is to attain the best performance of both male and female reproductive systems and to shed some light on infertility problems. Conclusion More in vivo experiments are still needed to address many aspects of probiotics like proper administration, exact functional strains, required dose, application method, duration of treatment, and combination with antibiotics before considering probiotics as an alternative treatment.
