Theory‐building and research conducted in the field of human development can inform the process of adult education. Three broad perspectives of human development—stage theory, phasic approaches, and the combination of the two—are discussed in terms of the insight they can bring to the field of adult education. Works of major theorists in both fields are considered in order to highlight the discussion. Contrasts are drawn between the development and education of adolescents and of adults. General recommendations for adult education are made, and a call is issued for further strengthening the ties between the fields of human development and adult education.
