<p>Global positioning system (GPS) tracker is an innovative technology that is able to track the position of vehicle using global satellite system. In this paper, vehicle tracker system design that is derived from global positioning system and global system for mobile communication (GSM) interface with the use of Arduino Uno board as platform is proposed and presented. Technology in Arduino, GSM, and GPS is studied.GPS module receives the coordinates from the satellite. The GPS coordinates are sent to users in the form of SMS through SIM900A GSM module. By using Google Maps, the exact location of the vehicle can be located. Arduino microcontroller is the gateway to all GPS and GSM hardware and software communication in the system. The design represents that GSM and GPS interface with the use of Arduino Uno board as platform can really make vehicle tracking more efficient and convenient since it can work in any weather conditions and provide real-time location of objects. Automatic display of the coordinate’s geographical location in a map should be integrated in future design.</p>
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), almost 98% of low and middle-income countries’ air fail to meet the United Nations (UN) body’s standards. Data from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) revealed the Total Suspended Particles (TSP) in Metro Manila during the first quarter of 2015 reached 130 micrograms per normal cubic meter (ug/Ncm). The maximum safe level is 90 ug/Ncm. Since 80% of pollution load is contributed by vehicles, the study determined the amount of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) during the smoke emission testing of motorcycles in Metro Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, Philippines. Random sampling and simple average formula were utilized in the study. Using the smoke test results from January to February 2015, it was found out that the average amount of CO is 1.45 µg/cm which is very low compared to DENR standard exposure value of 35 ug/cm for one hour and 10 µg/cm for 8-hour exposure. Also, the average amount of HC is 600.26 ppm which is low compared to DENR’s maximum set value of 4500ppm to 6500 ppm. Current findings indicate that the amount of CO of motorcycle emissions is insignificant while HC is low as compared to the standard value.
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology revolutionizes the automatic identification of objects. In this paper, library logging system based on radio frequency identification (RFID) interface using Arduino Uno board as platform is proposed and prototyped. Technology in Arduino and RFID are reviewed. RFID MFRC522, is a highly integrated reader/writer IC for contactless communication at 13.56 MHz. RFID technology uses electromagnetic fields to transfer data to automatically identify objects. Information of books with RFID tags are registered in the database system. When books are scanned in the RFID reader, the system will automatically give the information of the book and the current date and time. User will input the borrowers’ information which will automatically login into the system with the book details. Arduino microcontroller is used as a micro web server and a communications gateway among hardware modules. Design shows that RFID interfacing using Arduino Uno board as platform can make library logging system more efficient and convenient through the automation of workflow processes. To reduce library losses, security and item identification should be combined in a single tag in future designs.
The more urbanized and industrialized a country becomes, the more trash it produces. Waste management has been a crucial issue to be considered. In this paper, a smart bin using GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) modem and ultrasonic sensor interface with Arduino Uno board as platform is proposed and prototyped. Technology in arduino, ultrasonic sensor and GSM module are reviewed. The GSM module is an open, digital cellular technology used for transmitting mobile voice, data services and transmission of SMS (Short Message Service). Ultrasonic Ranging Module, HC - SR04, is placed on the cover of the dustbin which will determine the status of the garbage inside. The minimum level of garbage inside the dustbin is 10 cm. Once the garbage reaches the minimum level, HC - SR04 ultrasonic sensor triggers the GSM modem which will continuously alert the required authority until the garbage is removed from the dustbin. Design shows that GSM modem and ultrasonic sensor interfacing using Arduino Uno board as platform can make garbage collection operations smarter, more efficient and less wasteful. To be more energy-efficient, solar power will be incorporated into future designs.
Bluetooth is now mainstream that it has become synonymous with the 21st century. The wireless technology allows exchanging data over short distance using short wavelength radio transmission, providing convenience, intelligence and controllability. In this paper, a home lighting control system using arduino bluetooth interface with android smartphone as platform is proposed and prototyped. Technology in arduino, android smartphone and bluetooth are reviewed. HC-05 bluetooth SPP (Serial Port Protocol) module, designed for transparent wireless serial connection setup is being used in the design. Android application is downloaded to android smartphone to monitor and control the operation of the lighting system remotely. The application facilitates in controlling the operating pins of Arduino. Design shows that arduino bluetooth interfacing can control a house lighting using an android smartphone as a platform. In future lighting home automation, timer will be included to be more energy- efficient and highly scalable. For secured, ubiquitously accessible and remotely controlled lighting system, GSM module will be incorporated in future designs. It would be extended to the large-scale environment such as colleges, offices and factories, among others.
