Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine attitudes and knowledge regarding career planning after graduation, as well as the perceived educational environment of a pediatric clinical course, among nursing students at Menoufia University in Egypt. This study also investigated the influence of the perceived educational environment on future career planning among nursing students.Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was used, with a structured interview questionnaire that included demographic characteristics, a section that measured students' attitudes and knowledge toward their career planning, and the Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure Scale (DREEM).Results: The mean total score for the DREEM scale was 109.61, and most students perceived many areas within the program as more positive than negative. However, they had low levels of knowledge regarding career planning.Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, further efforts should be made to stimulate students' interest in pediatric nursing, to integrate theoretical content with practice, and to improve their planning activities early during their study. It is important to engage students in discussions concerning their ideas and worries about factors they perceive as less enhancing and more threatening in clinical settings.
Background: Fever is a common childhood health problem. Meanwhile, nursing research suggests that management of children with fever is not based on updated scientific evidence. For this reason, Purpose of the study: To assess the effect of an evidence-based protocol for childhood fever management on quality of care provided by nurses. Setting: The study was conducted in Pediatric Medical Department and Pediatric intensive care unit in Menoufia University Hospital. Research design: A quasi experimental (pre and post) was utilized to conduct the study. Sample: All nurses (48 nurses) who were working in the previously mentioned settings were included in this study. Instruments: Two instruments were used. Instrument one was structured interviewing questionnaire. Instrument two was nurses' clinical performance observational checklist. Results: Nurses had higher mean of knowledge level about definition of fever on posttest compared to pretest (38.2±2.8 Vs 21.3±6.8). Also, they had higher level of practices related to fever management on posttest than pretest (45.1±2.1 Vs 11.1±1.3) Conclusion: Implementation of an evidence-based protocol improved quality of care related to fever management. Recommendations: The study recommended that ongoing in-service education programs about evidence-based fever management must be designed and implemented in all pediatric departments and pediatric intensive care units to improve quality of care provided by nurses for children having fever.
Background: Chronic kidney disease is a progressive deterioration of kidney functions which associated with metabolism, fluids and electrolytes disturbances. In addition, impairment of growth and development. Purpose: it was to examine the effect of nutritional guidance on parents' awareness and nutritional status of children undergoing hemodialysis. A Quasi-experimental design was utilized. Setting: Pediatric Hemodialysis Unit, EL-Menoufia University Hospital in Shebein El-kom city. Sample: purposive sample of 30 children and their parents were included in the study. Instruments for data collection:three instruments were used, instrument one; A structured interview questionnaire developed by the investigators to collect data regarding the study consists of 2 parts: 1st part: socio demographic data of children, 2nd part: Parents' knowledge toward chronic kidney disease; instrument two was anthropometric measures and 24 hours dietary recall; instrument three was a structured interview questionnaire to assess parents awareness about nutritional requirements of their children. The results of this study showed that, more than half of children were under weight, around two thirds of children achieved normal weight on follow up test. The study concluded that implementation of nutritional guidance improved parents' awareness about adequate nutrition for their children and improved nutritional status of children undergoing hemodialysis on post and follow up tests than on pretest. Therefore, it was recommended that regular nutritional assessment of children should be maintained throughout their hemodialysis period and nurses should provide nutritional education for their mothers.
Background: Meningitis is an inflammation and swelling of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. It could be fatal or cause serious lasting side effects. It is imperative that pediatric nurses have the knowledge and training related to lumbar puncture to ensure a positive process for child. Purpose of the study was: to assess nurses' pitfalls of lumbar puncture procedure for children with meningitis. Design: A descriptive design was utilized. Setting, this study was conducted in Shebin El-Kom Fever Hospital in Menoufia Governorate in Egypt. Sample: A convenient sample of seventy nurses worked at the previously mentioned setting. All hospitalized children with meningitis were exposed to lumbar puncture procedure throughout the period of data collection were included in the study. Two tools were utilized for data collection, I-A Structured interviewing questionnaire and, II-An Observational checklist. Results: It revealed that there were highly statistically significant differences between nurses' pitfalls on pretest Conclusion, most of studied nurses have nursing pitfalls related to lumbar puncture. .Recommendation: pediatric nurses should update their knowledge and performance through continued nursing education, training, and frequently attending seminars and conferences based on their needs assessment.
