Hair tonic is one of the cosmetic products for hair loss treatment that can be applied practically, absorbed easily by the scalp, and posseses no irritation effect. Various plant extracts are formulated to treat hair loss as an alternative to synthetic-based hair tonics which causing harmful side effects. Ziziphus nummularia is potential to treat hair loss due to its antiinflammatory and antioxidant activities, reducing the negative effects of oxidative stress on scalp’s papillae cell. However, there are limited information on hair tonic formulation and testing of bidara leaves extract on hair growth in mammals. This study aimed to determine the best hair tonic formula from bidara leaves etahnolic extract and to test its activity on hair growth of rabbits. The study was conducted at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Laboratory, Garut University, from March 2020 to March 2021. The treatments were hair tonic formulations from ethanolic extract of bidara leaves at 3%, 6%, and 12% concentrations; distilled water (negative control) and minoxidil (positive control) and repeated three times Parameters observed were hair tonic characteristics (odor, color, viscocity, homogeneity, pH), irritation effect and hair growth rate. The formulas of 3%, 6%, and 12% of bidara leaves ethanolic extract had uniform odor, color, viscosity, homogeneity, and pH. Furthermore, all three formulas were non-irritating to rabbit skin. The best formula was hair tonic with 3% ethanolic extract of bidara leaves which was stimulated rabbit’s hair growth up to 10.67 mm for 28 days and was better than control and 2% minoxidil.
