This current study was intended to develop the ecolinguistic perspective-based syllabus. The descriptive qualitative method was applied and natural phenomena were used to develop syllabus. The phenomena focused on to what extent English was mastered by learners and what learning and teaching strategies were applied. The data were obtained through test, questionnaire and direct observation for the need analysis. The State Document related to the curriculum policy was referred to in the situation analysis. The syllabus was developed based on the results of the need analysis and situation analysis and the ecolinguistic perpective-related theories. The contents of the syllabus were developed based on the following elements; they are text, context, linguistic elements, learning situation, teaching and learning activities (Kegiatan Belajar Mengajar, abbreviated to KBM) and evaluation. The content of the text was adjusted to the transactional and interpersonal functions. The context was created based on the inter-, intra-, and trans-cultural contexts of the ecological, social and ideological dimensions. KBM was prepared in accordance with the cognitive linguistic process for the language-related activities and based on the situation chosen by learners for the language production. The outcome of language performance was measured using the performance assessment system, causing the contents of the syllabus to reflect that one element was connected with another in such a way that they formed one integral language meaning.
Virginia Woolf was a British writer. She committed suicide in 1941, leaving suicide notes for her sister and her husband. Her suicide note was made public and was misquoted under the misleading headline in newspapers' articles. This made people at that time misinterpret her suicide notes. This analysis aims to prove the genuineness of Virginia Woolf's suicide notes, reveal the intention behind her suicide notes, and investigate the real motive of her suicide with Linguistics Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) program and semantic forensic analysis in forensic linguistics perspective. In conclusion, Virginia Woolf's suicide notes are considered genuine and have positive emotional tone. The result of this analysis supports the statement of another psychologist that her suicide was triggered by Bipolar disorder.
This research aims at identifying the semantic changes in the translation of euphemism and dysphemism of news text of Tempo Magazine. This research used a descriptive qualitative method and took the data from bilingual Tempo Magazine edition 2019 with Indonesian in a source language and its translation into English. The result shows that 6 types of semantic change occur in the translation of euphemism and dysphemism of Tempo Magazines such as semantic broadening, semantic narrowing, semantic metaphor, semantic pejoration, semantic amelioration, and semantic metonymy. When euphemism or dysphemism are translated into the same categories, they undergo semantic broadening, narrowing, metonymy or metaphor. While semantic change pejorations occur when euphemism is translated into dysphemism and semantic change ameliorations occur when dysphemism is translated into euphemism. Even though there are changing of the meaning from the earlier one to the new one in the translation of euphemism and dysphemism, the sense relation still tied the words up so they still have a relation between them
The aim of this study is to examine the practice of Petang Megang tradition on indigenous Muslim Malay people in Pekanbaru Riau in welcoming the holy month of Ramadhan, and to investigate the influence of Hinduism on this annual tradition. Petang Megang ritual does not only function as a passed-on tradition, but also reflects the acculturation of Hindu and Islam, social interaction, and community culture. This research is a descriptive study, in which data obtained are presented, analyzed, and explained. This study found that Petang Megang tradition reflects a strong relationship between the two beliefs, Hindu and Islam. The relationship can be seen in the similar concepts of purification in Petang Megang which is similar to tirtayatra in Hindu and wudhu (ablution) in Islam. Despite bringing similarity to Hindu tradition, Petang Megang serves as a medium of Islamic dawah (propagation) where it introduces a cultural practice in its relation to religious event (Ramadan). This study suggests that Petang Megang is a symbol of longstanding harmonious co-existence between Hindu and Islam in the region.
This study is entitled Pronunciation Errors in Students' English-Speaking Performance. It aims at analyzing pronunciation errors found in students' speaking performance. Besides, this study also investigates the factors that cause pronunciation errors in student speaking performance. The data of this study were obtained from the results of a speaking test conducted on 8th Grader of Class C Students of SMP Negeri 2 Blahbatuh, Gianyar Regency, Bali, Indonesia. The test was done by asking students to briefly told their experiences during the holidays. The documentation method was used to obtain the data from oral material (speaking performance). A note-taking technique was applied to mark down the relevant data for the study. The data of the study were qualitatively analysed based on theory of phonological errors by Keshavarz (2012), and factors causing errors by Brown (2000). The analysis of this study was presented in informal methods. In the informal method, each problem in this study was presented narratively to make the analysis understood easily. The finding reveals that there are several errors found in students' speaking performance. Errors include pronunciation errors of English vowels, consonants, and diphthong. The cause of errors in pronunciation of English consonants and English vowels is the intralingual and interlingual factors. Pronunciation errors of English consonant are mostly caused by interlingual factors, while vowel pronunciation errors tend to be caused by intralingual factors.
