Commercial interests in indoor localization have been increasing in the past decade. The success of many applications relies at least partially on indoor localization that is expected to provide reliable indoor position information. Wi-Fi received signal strength (RSS)-based indoor localization techniques have attracted extensive attentions because Wi-Fi access points (APs) are widely deployed and we can obtain the Wi-Fi RSS measurements without extra hardware cost. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical classification-based method as a new solution to the indoor localization problem. Within the developed approach, we first adopt an improved K-Means clustering algorithm to divide the area of interest into several zones and they are allowed to overlap with one another to improve the generalization capability of the following indoor positioning process. To find the localization result, the K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) algorithm and support vector machine (SVM) with the one-versus-one strategy are employed. The proposed method is implemented on a tablet, and its performance is evaluated in real-world environments. Experiment results reveal that the proposed method offers an improvement of 1.4% to 3.2% in terms of position classification accuracy and a reduction of 10% to 22% in terms of average positioning error compared with several benchmark methods.
Lifetime requirements and coverage demands are emphasized in wireless sensor networks. An area coverage algorithm based on differential evolution is developed in this study to obtain a given coverage ratio e. The proposed algorithm maximizes the lifetime of wireless sensor networks to monitor the area of interest. To this end, we translate continuous area coverage into classical discrete point coverage, so that the optimization process can be realized by wireless sensor networks. Based on maintaining the e-coverage performance, area coverage algorithm based on differential evolution takes the minimal energy as optimization objective. In area coverage algorithm based on differential evolution, binary differential evolution is redeveloped to search for an improved node subset and thus meet the coverage demand. Taking into account that the results of binary differential evolution are depended on the initial value, the resulting individual is not an absolutely perfect node subset. A compensation strategy is provided to avoid unbalanced energy consumption for the obtained node subset by introducing the positive and negative utility ratios. Under the helps of those ratios and compensation strategy, the resulting node subset can be added additional nodes to remedy insufficient coverage, and redundancy active nodes can be pushed into sleep state. Furthermore, balance and residual energy are considered in area coverage algorithm based on differential evolution, which can expand the scope of population exploration and accelerate convergence. Experimental results show that area coverage algorithm based on differential evolution possesses high energy and computation efficiencies and provides 90% network coverage.
Swarm intelligent algorithms are embedded into sensor networks to achieve perfect coverage with minimal cost. However, these methods are often highly complex and easily fall into the local optimum when balancing coverage and resource consumption. We introduce adaptive improved fish swarm optimization (AIFS) that extricates each node from the local optimum and reduces overlap and overflow coverage. Drawing on the habits of fish, AFIS ensures node mobility with respect to the food concentration at a certain point. Node dispersion shows good compromise under coordination by two presented parameters, namely, food concentration and crowd density. In addition to inheriting properties from traditional fish swarm, the initial random nodes become dispersed without overflow in assisting the proposed jumping and dodging behavior. The resulting network avoids potential local optima and improves the network boundary coverage efficiency. The convergence speed and efficiency of AIFS are verified. Extensive simulation experiments reveal that an improved coverage gain is obtained, and computation cost and overflow waste are reduced.
In this study, an interval extension method of a bi-iterative is proposed to determine a moving source. This method is developed by utilising the time difference of arrival and frequency difference of arrival measurements of a signals received from several receivers. Unlike the standard Gaussian noise model, the time difference of arrival - frequency difference of arrival measurements are obtained by interval enclosing, which avoids convergence and initialisation problems in the conventional Taylor-series method. Using the bi-iterative strategy, the algorithm can alternately calculate the position and velocity of the moving source in interval vector form. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms other methods, and approaches the Cramer-Rao lower bound at a sufficiently high noise level before the threshold effect occurs. Moreover, the interval widths of the results provide the confidence degree of the estimate.
