This paper presents the results of a study that identifies the information needs of music students at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). A survey method using questionnaires were distributed to 150 respondents of music students, of which 130 (86.67 %) were returned. The findings revealed that the most needed music information by respondents are music theory, notation, aural skill, music recordings, music instrument, rhythms, music resources, harmony (chord), arranging (score) and music history. The methods used to get the information are by discussing with their friends/relative, talking to senior students, surfing internet, read book and advice from the expert in order to get the information. This paper reports on the findings of a part of a study that aims to investigate the information needs and the kinds of information needed for decision-making by managers of small and medium-sized enterprise (SME). It identifies their information needs when they were in the early stage of their business experience. Data were collected from SME managers operating their business in Shah Alam, Malaysia. Results revealed that the most common kinds of information required by SME managers were business information/opportunities, followed by financial sources, current marketing trends, location, survey/research, sources of raw materials/ products, information on customers, government regulations/policies and competitors. The most common kinds of information required for decision-making were business opportunities/competitors, followed by finance, methods of analysis, market, data, suppliers (of raw materials/ products) and innovation/technology. The study had a vital impact on making recommendations to business supporting agencies and business sectors relating to SME in Malaysia.
This paper presents part of a study that investigates the level of importance of the various types (kinds) of information needed by music students at the Faculty of Music in one public university in Malaysia. A sample of 150 respondents of music students were taken, of which 130 (86.67 %) of the distributed questionnaire were returned. The findings revealed that two types of music information are perceived by the respondents to be important to their academic matters. They are information related to the notation (mean = 4.14) and music theory (mean = 4.02). The rest are considered as quite important which are aural skill (mean = 3.98), music instrument (mean = 3.91), music recordings (mean = 3.88), rhythms (mean = 3.83), music resource (mean = 3.87), harmony (chord) (mean = 3.81), arranging (score) (mean = 3.75) and composition (arrangement) (mean = 3.69). There is no evidence of difference regarding the level of importance of music information differences which are gender, age and course among the groups of respondents. The findings will assist the librarians to identify the information required by music students in order to fulfill the students' information needs especially regarding the academic matters towards their academic development.
This preliminary study aims to examine the perceptions of students on the benefits of using social media and the impact of not filtering the information. A set of questionnaire has been distributed to 50 students from the Faculty of Information Management, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Puncak Perdana, Shah Alam Malaysia. Thirty-six (36) or 72 per cent of the questionnaires were returned and were used for analysis. Results show that students have positive perceptions on the benefits of using social media (mean = 4.01). They agree that using social media will increase connectivity and encourage information-sharing among friends. The findings also show that students agree on the impact of not filtering information (mean = 4.00), which may cause confidential information to be used for blackmailing purposes. The outcome of this study is important as it reflects on students' awareness on the benefits of social media and the impact of unfiltered information.
The proliferation of social media has become extremely famous among the societies. Societies accept this technology as an important amenity in their daily lives. However, of each of the advancement of the technology, it must be good for mutual benefits although there are the cons on the misuse of this technology. Here, the issue of ethics and integrity in the use of social media are emphasized to show people that the misuse of the technology can happen unnoticed or unplanned. Currently, hot topics or issues on social ethics and integrity in the media have so often given a big impact in people's lives. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the matters of ethics and integrity in social media. It mentions the societies as the startingpoint for addressing major challenges and issues, reviews literature on social media trends and research, draws on examples of influences and also personal competencies required for ethics and integrity. The review from various empirical studies and literature reviews will focus on two (2) major aspects; leadership and education which will be a great contribution to any research done in this area in the near future.
