Introducción: la diabetes mellitus es una enfermedad crónica no transmisible considerada la principal morbimortalidad a nivel mundial. Objetivo: implementar una intervención terapéutica para elevar el control glucémico de los pacientes con diabetes tipo 2. Métodos: investigación cuantitativa con diseño cuasi experimental de un sólo grupo pretest-postest, en tres fases: pretest, con la aplicación de la escala de riesgo de diabetes finlandés y el cuestionario sobre conocimiento en diabetes. La fase intervención con la realización de charlas educativas para fomentar un control metabólico y postest con la aplicación de los instrumentos posterior a la intervención. En el Servicio de Laboratorio del Hospital Provincial General Docente de Riobamba se realizaron la glucosa en ayunas y hemoglobina glicosilada. Los datos procesados por el software estadístico (SPSS Estatistics 24.0 para windows), por medio del cálculo porcentual, la prueba de Wilcoxon yla prueba de McNemar, con significancia estadística (p<0.05). Resultados: predominaron los pacientes con evolución de 6-10 años con diabetes tipo 2, con dos o más complicaciones: dermatológicas, osteomusculares y neurológicas. En el nivel de conocimientos sobre el autocuidado después de la intervención educativa existió un aumento en el nivel bueno y excelente, con un descenso del nivel regular y malo, con una diferencia significativa p<0,05. La hemoglobina glucosilada después de la intervención educativa presentó un incremento adecuado y normal del control glucémico, con una con una diferencia significativa p<0,05. Conclusiones La intervención terapéutica incrementó el nivel de conocimientos de autocuidado, con un control glucémico adecuado establecido con la hemoglobina glucosilada. Objective: to implement a therapeutic intervention to increase the glycemic control of patients with type 2 diabetes. The intervention phase with the realization of educational talks to promote metabolic control and post-test with the application of the instruments after the intervention. Fasting glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin were performed at the Laboratory Service of the Riobamba Provincial Teaching Hospital. The data processed by the statistical software (SPSS Statistics 24.0 for windows), by means of the percentage calculation, the Wilcoxon test and the McNemar test, with statistical significance (p <0.05). Results: patients with a 6-10 year evolution with type 2 diabetes predominate, with two or more complications: dermatological, musculoskeletal and neurological. In the level of knowledge about self-care of the educational intervention, there was an increase in the good and excellent level, with a decrease in the regular and bad level, with a significant difference p<0.05. Glycated hemoglobin after the educational intervention showed an adequate and normal increase in glycemic control, with one with a significant difference p<0.05. Conclusions The therapeutic intervention increased the level of self-care knowledge, with an adequate glycemic control established with glycated hemoglobin.
