The reaction of methylnlagnesiunl bromide with benzophenone in tetrahydrofuran was found to be homogeneous and essentially quantitative. The rates of this reaction were measured b y following the decrease in absorbance of benzophenone in the ultraviolet as a function of time. Variables examined were concentrations of reactants, magnesium bromide, and temperature. Values were derived for the rate constants, dnd the energy and entropy of activation. The reaction was found to be initially first order in each reactant, but the rate decreased faster with time than would be predicted from the simple second-order rate equation. The implications of these findings are discussed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
