Malaysia is expected to face ageing population in year 2030. This phenomenon is a challenge that hinders the provision of an excellent environment, including housing them. Active ageing refers to the process of improving the quality of life amongst the elderly in terms of health, social, physical, and environmental aspects. Provision of environment that is conducive and promotion of active surrounding highly influence the elderly to stay active. Nonetheless, literature pertaining to this particular topic area from the stance of elderly Muslims is in scarcity. Hence, the objective of this study is to determine terms associated to active ageing from the Muslim perspective and to identify the appropriate housing environment for them. Data collected from questionnaires distributed to 411 respondents residing in Johor were analysed quantitatively. The outcomes suggest that active ageing amongst elderly Muslims displayed positive effects on spiritual and religious activities. Upon providing housing for them, active ageing is essential so as to perceive active living and exceptional well-being
Active ageing enables people to realise their potential for physical, social and mental wellbeing in leading a healthy lifestyle. Malaysia has to classify the people who are under active ageing as the environment and culture may different from other countries especially for the Muslim elderly. The Muslim elderly people focus on their spiritual needs which led to the importance of their culture, belief, and religiosity besides the focus of being healthy, socialising, and being physically fit. Therefore the study is ideally aimed at giving introspection to the active ageing for the Muslims in Malaysia and the roles of religious and spiritual in their active living. A questionnaire survey has been conducted among 411 of Muslim elderly within 10 district of Johor. A descriptive analyses and Likert scale were used to tap the frequency level of active ageing determinants. Finding suggests that the spirituality and religious activity is important for Muslim elderly to pursue their active living. The main contributions of this study are the determination of active ageing for Muslim elderly and provide the guidelines to various parties for the improvement of a new policy that can cater the elderly people's needs, health care, social life, lifestyle, and facilities for a better living condition.
Abstract. Sustainable development strategies are becoming demanded in assisting in wealth distribution and improving living conditions for mankind. A sustained community is one of the sustainable development agendas that encourage community involvement and participation in contributing to sustainability. Moreover, with the rapid population growth, especially in urban cities as the proportion of urban dwellers will reach two-thirds of the world population, this will lead to several problems including the social life changing intensely. Sustainable Cohousing is one of the suggested answers for an innovative form of neighbourly accommodation. Generally, Cohousing is formed by a group of people who are committed to living as a community and who actively participate in the design and operation to shape their own neighbourhood. Through this concept, the community can decide how they can implement sustainability principles in terms of social, economical and environmental terms in their neighbourhood. Therefore, it is important to bring back the sense of togetherness amongst the people and improve their social wellbeing through an effective neighbourhood. The objective of this study is to isolate the basic concept of Cohousing and to identify the conceptual framework of Sustainable Cohousing that may apply to improving the sustainable living in Malaysia. The research methodology was through identifying and reviewing the issues in existing literature on cohousing chosen from various dimensions, such as principles and elements, sustainable value, development model and so on, which can be suited with the Malaysian culture. The findings of this research are useful for property development practitioners and policy makers in promoting sustainability through the new concept of modern housing.
