Purpose: The outbreak of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is projected to have severe potential threats to university reputation. This paper aims to examine how rebuilding crisis response strategies (RCRS) will protect and sustain the university's reputations during and after emerging outbreaks of pandemic crises in the Nigerian context. Design/methodology/approach: This review paper is on the synthesis of university covid-19 related news, supported by relevant literature review on Covid-19 and university reputation, and the strength of Situational Crisis Communication Theory's (SCCT) rebuilding response strategies. However, the authors' personal experiences in investigating the trends on pandemic crises and university reputation sustainability also contributed to the study. Findings: This paper predicts that epidemics and pandemics have a potential impact on university reputation, thus, affecting good stakeholders' relationships, positive marketization, smooth functionalization, and favorable working environments. Rebuilding response strategies have the power to protect and rebuild universities' reputations during and after a pandemic crisis. Therefore, rebuilding strategies should be considered by university bodies for reputational sustainability during and after a pandemic crisis in the Nigerian context. Research limitations/implications: This review is limited to the pandemic crisis and its response strategies among Nigerian universities. While Nigerian universities reflect upon how to bring positive changes in terms of university-industry reputation following this Covid-19 pandemic, subsequent research should also consider the best possible crisis response strategy among universities to mitigate the effects of similar future pandemics crises, looking at other geographical contexts. Practical implications: This review paper serves as recommendations for Nigerian universities and policymakers, focusing on reputation sustainability during a pandemic crisis. The suggestions may help in the alleviation of and fight against an emerging pandemic-related outbreak, offers university bodies a newly enriching pandemic response strategy, and partially if not completely mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on the university's reputation.
Underpinned by anxiety/uncertainty management (AUM) theory, this study uses Baron and Kenny's (1986) framework to test the prediction that intercultural willingness to communicate (IWTC) mediated the relationship between anxiety and uncertainty among international students at University Putra Malaysia. The previous study displayed a significant relationship between anxiety, uncertainty, and intercultural adjustment while moderated by mindfulness. As a high-context culture in communication, Malaysia specialized in interpersonal and intergroup communication among ethnic and races. While intercultural willingness to communicate plays a crucial role in intercultural communication. Results through Multi-linear regression (SPSS) to investigate a possible method for testing mediation effects of intercultural willingness to communicate (IWTC) on the relationship between anxiety and uncertainty. Employed surveys were used to collect data to test hypotheses predicting intercultural adaptation. A total of 201 international students which includes undergraduates and post-graduate students at the University Putra Malaysia participated in the survey. This study revealed that anxiety and uncertainty have a direct negative influence on intercultural willingness to communicate and an indirect negative influence on intercultural adjustment. Especially, this study was conducted under the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Guided by Agenda Cutting theory, this study examines the pattern of media coverage on issues portrayed in Tamil newspapers and Facebook during Malaysian General Election 13. A total of 1309 news articles from Tamil Nesan and Malaysia Nanban and 111 postings on MIC's Facebook were identified and examined during the election campaign period from April 20-May 6, 2013, specifically just before and soon after the election. A total of 127 Facebook accounts of MIC's candidates for state and parliamentary constituencies were examined during the same period. Findings show that out of the 17 examined issues eight issues (i.e., crime, social, environment, national unity, nationalism, health issues, international relations and immigrants) were not reported by these Indian dailies. A similar result can also be found on MIC's parliamentary and state seat candidates' Facebook. Findings from this study draw a conclusion that without a flawed agenda cutting strategy, the MIC could have garnered valuable electoral votes during its GE13 campaign.
This systematic literature review describes the importance of social media for political participation. The widespread use of social media at the social level in China has promoted extensive academic research on this media. This study makes a systematic analysis of the existing research on the use of social media for political participation by Chinese youth (for college students). The goal of the current study is to evaluate and compare the existing research on political participation on social media. The first aspect of the study involved a search of the literature to determine the depth of study on social media and political participation. The second aspect of literature concentrated on categorizing works that discuss how social media has affected political engagement. How much of the research on social media has been devoted to studying political participation? How many of these research were conducted with Chinese college students as a focus? How many of these studies are conducted from China's perspective? Understanding the true views of college students on political participation and observing their political participation behaviors can better open political communication channels between the government and youth groups, establish a demand response feedback mechanism between youth and the government, improve youth political literacy, promote youth political socialization, and promote the development of socialist democracy in China.
