This study seeks to explore the hidden challenges to the mission/operation of peace (peace operation/mission). Ideally, as envisioned by the perspective of liberal peace, humanitarian mission should be carried out purely on the basis of values of humanism in order to address the humanitarian crisis phenomenon. However, this assumption has weaknesses because it is ignorant of potential piracy against peace operations in which the latter are just cover for the implementation of the vested interests of the actors involved in the mission. Piracy against peace operations is essentially a new form of "civilizing mission", the strategy used by colonialist countries in order to give legitimacy to their rule in the colonies. The essence of the "civilizing mission" strategy is to show the invaders as a helper of the colonized countries. This study would like to explore how piracy against these peace operations occur in the context of Libya (2011). A number of foreign countries such as the United States are involved in peace operations in Libya, with the primary mission to implement a no-fly zone and protection of human security. This study includes a discussion of the vested interests behind the peace mission, the discourse used by the actors mission to wrap their vested interests as purely based on humanism, and the impact of of this strategy to the conduct of peace operations in general.
This article analyses an experiment in liberal-progressive politics that occurred in Indonesia in 2019. A new party, the Partai Solidaritas Indonesia (PSI, Indonesian Solidarity Party), supported gender equality as part of a broad liberal programme. PSI foregrounded female candidates and focused on gender issues, including controversial topics such as opposition to polygamy. Reflecting party campaign strategies that focused on media exposure, rather than grassroot mobilisation, the party garnered support mostly from educated urban voters. Support for women’s equality – especially on issues such as sexual harassment and gender-based violence – is concentrated in this group and partly reflects recent cultural shifts linked to globalisation and changes in the media landscape. PSI failed to gain representation in the national legislature, limiting its potential to play a major political role in the near future. Even so, this experiment provided opportunities for young women to step forward politically and has popularised discourse on women’s equality.
This article seeks to critically examine the performances of Ramayana as one of the cultural attractions is held periodically in the area of Prambanan temple. This study is motivated from concerns about the negative impact of globalization that hit the third world countries, including Indonesia. Among the negative form of globalization is economic and foreign cultural invasion that further marginalize local economic actors and diluting the national culture. Ramayana is an example case interesting because it uses global influences into Indonesia and transforming positively for the benefit of culture-based tourism. This tactic proved to be successful to make Ramayana as a tourist attraction that is quite attractive to foreign tourists or domestic. The article attempts to read the Ramayana as a form of glocalization, which emphasizes creativity in combining global elements with a particular locality. In addition, this article seeks to offer alternative improvements to the Ramayana using Multi-Stakeholder Governance framework and Value Chain approach.
This study seeks to undertake critical reading of a number of military coup d’etat attempts that took place in 2016. The failure of the military coup d’etat can be read not as a victory of democracy, but rather as the consolidation effort that is continuously formed by Erdogan’s regime to increasingly exert his power in all areas of Turks life. This study rests on official discourse voiced by the Turkish government that states Gulen Hizmet movement plays an important role in the coup d’etat attempt. Unfortunately, Erdogan’s regime has acknowledged Gulen steps. Then, he designed a counter-coup operation in such a way in order to, firstly, quell the coup d’etat attempts that occur thus ensuring Erdogan’s regime persisted; second, make sure the coup d’etat attempt at certain level is still running so that it can be utilized for the benefit of Erdogan’s regime. The research method used in this research is discourse analysis with analytical framework based on Rossa and Nugroho Notosusanto theory about G30S event in Indonesia (which has been modified to read coup attempt in Turkey). The data sources used in this study are based entirely on secondary sources, including international and Turkish media coverage of the course of the coup. Includes various articles written by various experts / analysts about the incident. Keywords: Erdogan, Gulen, Paralel State, Coup d’etat, Neo AtaturkAbstrakStudi ini berupaya melakukan pembacaan kritis upaya kudeta sejumlah kalangan militer yang berlangsung di tahun 2016. Kata Kunci: Erdogan, Gulen, Paralel State, Kudeta, Neo Ataturk
