AbstractSustainable development is to satisfy the needs of today's demand without compromising the ability and opportunity of the future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development includes the components of ecological and social sustainability in addition to the economic developments. In the process of sustainable development, especially the states, corporations, financial sector, and all other segments of civil society organizations have important roles. Financial sector constitutes indirect effects on the environment (by means of providing funds) and direct effects (directly energy usage). In this context, it comes into prominence to determine the impact of financial sector on the environment and therefore on the sustainable development. In this study, in order to analyze the financial sector development on the sustainable development in the period of 1980-2012, multivariate regression analysis method was used. According to the results, it was concluded that financial sector has both positive and negative impacts on the sustainable development.
