Despite various initiatives and investments in youth entrepreneurship and start-ups, youth participation in agribusiness has not significantly increased. Therefore, this study analyzed the perceived effects of entrepreneurial traits on youth’s willingness to exploit agribusiness opportunities in Nigeria. A total of 3600 respondents were randomly selected across Nigeria using an online well-structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using a binomial logistic regression among other tools. The study found that, although only 17% of the respondents were exploiting agribusiness opportunities as of 2020, about 77% of the respondents were willing to exploit agribusiness opportunities in the next 2 years. The study found that entrepreneurial traits had no significant influence on youth’s willingness to exploit agribusiness opportunities until each of the traits was moderated by an individual’s entrepreneurial intention. The implications of the findings are discussed in the study.
This study was carried out to investigate the cost-benefit of cocoa production in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State. Primary data were used for this study and a well-structured questionnaire and personal interview were used for the collection of the data. The production data covered a period of 3years (2018-2020). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, budgetary technique and multiple regression analysis. The study showed that the majority (64.2%) of the farmers were within the active age group, with an average age of 55years old. About 72.5% of the cocoa farmers were male and 27.5% were female. The majority (68.3%) of the farmers were married and nearly (65.0%) had a household size of 4 – 6 members. The sampled cocoa farmers had an average farming experience of 17 years, while about 75% of the farmers had formal education and 25% had no formal education. The study revealed that the total costs were estimated to be N165,001.85, N120,822.62 and N108,243.55 for the period of 2018, 2019 and 2020, respectively. The study recorded a Net Farm Income of N360,437.17, N499,228.80 and N591,993.82 across the years. The result of the cost-benefit analysis showed that at an interest rate of 20%, cocoa production was profitable. Also, a benefit-cost ratio of 4.48 was obtained indicating that for every N1 invested in cocoa production, a profit of N3.48 kobo was made as a profit which implies that cocoa production was profitable in the study area. The result revealed that inadequate credit facilities are the major constraint in the study area followed by inadequate modern equipment. This implies that the majority of the cocoa farmers are still practising the traditional farming method. Therefore, it is recommended that extension workers should be visiting the farmers in the study area regularly to enlighten them on modern techniques to adopt to boost cocoa production in the study area.
The study was carried out to examine the profitability of maize production in Akoko South-West Local Government Area, Ondo State, Nigeria. The data for the study were collected primarily using a well-structured questionnaire and interview schedules. The production data covered a period of 3years (2018-2020). A multistage sampling procedure was used to randomly select 120 respondents. Descriptive statistics, budgetary analysis and a Linear multiple regression model were used to analyse the data. The results showed that the average age of the respondent was 44 years, with (65.0%) of them being male. Majority of the maize farmers (85.3%) were married and had an average family size of 5 members. The result also proved that only 5.8% of the farmers had no formal education while 94.2% of them had one form of education or the other. Furthermore, the average farm size of the majority of the respondent was 1.5ha and only 15% had access to one form of credit or the other. The result of the budgetary analysis revealed that the total costs of N75,970, N50,523 and N46,784 were invested in maize farming in 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively and net farm income of N50,760, N115,117 and N134,488 were realized for the period. This implies that the maize farming business is a profitable agribusiness enterprise. The net present value was N200,042.91 at the interest rate of (20%) and with a benefit-cost ratio of 2.1 indicating that for every N1 invested in maize farming, a profit ofN1.1 kobo was made. The study concluded that household size, educational status, access to credit and cost of labour were the factors that influenced the profitability of maize farmers in the study area. Thus, it is recommended that farmers should be encouraged to form a cooperative society in order to generate funds to expand their farm enterprise. Also, maize farmers should be encouraged to practice mixed cropping in order to enhance the level of maize farm income. The study evaluated the economic analysis of cassava production in Akoko area of Ondo State, Nigeria. Data were collected using a well-structured questionnaire and interview schedule. Descriptive statistics, budgetary techniques and multiple regression model were employed for the data analysis. The results showed that the majority (72.7%) of cassava farmers were male households and they were within the active age group given a mean of 50years with a mean household size of 5 persons. About 80.7% of the farmers were married and had an average farming experience of 13years while about 82.0% of them had formal education. The cassava farmers had an average farm size of 1.9ha and many (62.7%) of them started their farming business with their personal income. The results of budgetary analysis revealed that the net farm income was ₦149,101.92 with the return on investment of ₦1.5. This implies that for every N1 invested in the business, there is a return of 50k. The result of the multiple linear regression showed that agrochemical, labour, farm input, and age were the major factors that had a significant influence on the profit of the cassava farmers. Again, inadequate capital for start-up, unstable price, and high cost of inputs were the main constraints faced by the farmers in the area. From the findings, there is a need for the cassava farmers in the study area to form a cassava farmer corporative to solve problems of accessibility to loan, resource allocation, dissemination of information and other challenges as this will increase their productivity and output.
