A case study was initiated from the perspective of three research questions: 1) CLIL teachers' practices at secondary schools of Aktobe during COVID-19 pandemic; 2) challenges for the teachers; 3) support provided for the teachers. The research methodology combined face-to-face personal interviews, and non-participant observation. Data analysis was conducted in line with Mayring's (2020) approach to content analysis and by means of categorization into specific themes that emerge from teachers' conceptualization of their CLIL practices. The analysis of teachers' reflections on their experiences and challenges of using the CLIL approach during the pandemic, support provided to them and teachers' attitudes towards the approach is presented in the paper. Research data on the secondary schools Science teachers' CLIL practices in a remote learning setting was categorized related preparation to teaching, resources used by the teachers, students' interaction during the lessons, and stakeholders' attitudes and perceptions of the approach. The obtained data enables to understand Science teachers' practices in Kuzembayeva et al. / Contemporary Educational Technology, 2022, 14(2), ep362 2 / 11 terms of using the CLIL approach in Kazakhstani secondary schools in the period of COVID-19 pandemic, and will contribute to teacher development and preparation for successful CLIL realization in a nontraditional classroom.
The paper focuses on of the most critical social challenges during the current pandemic. It aims to consider the phenomenon of infodemic at international, regional, and national levels.The paper provides concrete examples of the mentioned trends and features.The research materials include the UNO, World Health Organization, EU documents, and national documents of several countries, mass media statements with regard to the infodemic roots, essence, tools, actors, consequences.The research methodology rests on the comparative qualitative approach to the data analysis, also uses the case study techniques as each research item is considered as a case. Totally over 250 items were subject to study.The results show that the international community realizes the threat of infodemic, recognizes the need of coordinated response in the form of communication policies.As far as the national level is concerned, many countries take legislation measures to combat the infodemic, introduced amendments to the administrative and criminal legal acts to impose administrative and criminal liability of physical and legal persons whose disinformation activities cause harm to other people lives and health.The findings lead to the conclusion on the need to the coordinated policy of the information provision within emergency settings at international, regional, and local national levels. The paper also considers some examples of such an approach within national practices of several countries and as an additional information sets forth brief outline of national universities activities that helped to play down and counter the disinformation at microlevel, with regard to information provision within a particular region of the country.
The research is implemented within the framework of the RUDN university participation in the Russia-wide 5-100 project. The current importance of the present research rests on the fact that despite long-standing traditions and intensive research work in the field of interpretation studies, the Academia and Industry still make first steps to consider urgent needs in the area of language service provision to refugees in the migration crisis zones. The research aims to explore the interpreters' needs that produce specific challenges in the context of their work with refugees in the border crossing and temporary settlement zones with the view to consider the concept and constituent components of interpreter's bespoke training for refugee crisis settings. The research methodology applies the qualitative analysis and rests on theoretical and empirical activities. Materials for theoretical analysis involve publications on the issues under study. Empirical studies encompass observations and case studies of concrete situations outlined by professionals working with refugees in Greece, Italy, Germany, the Yugoslav Successor States, and Russia. The research also includes cluster and factor types of analysis to identify aspects of training and ensure quality when interpreting in the migration crisis settings. Statistical Package for the Social Sciences is used for data procession. The research findings allow for drafting preliminary recommendations on adequate administrative and training tools regarding interpreters' activities in refugees' transit/border crossing zones and refugee camps.
The paper analyzes provision of medical interpreting services at border crossing points in the Russian Federation. It is argued in the article that medical interpreting at border crossing points should be viewed as linguacultural mediation in the context close to emergency situations, which requires specific interpreter's competences. The article aims at indenting relevant competences of medical interpreters at border crossing points through conducting an experiment on quality of medical services provision to migrants and refugees in terms of effective interpreter assisted doctor–patient communication. The research methodology rests on cluster, factor and discriminant analysis and integrated two stages: desk and field stages. To conduct the survey part an open-ended questionnaire has been developed which included 7 items. The survey was anonymous and involved native speakers of Arabic, Pashto, Dari, Uzbek, Tajik languages. The conducted research made it possible to identify factors that negatively influenced ultimate assessment of medical services provision at border crossing points. These factors are two-fold: the fists category relates to organizational issues such as lack of specific medicines and doctors with narrow specialization, stressful atmosphere and lengthy border crossing procedure; second category includes linguistic factor such as interpreter's knowledge of communicants' cultural background, ability to act as mediator, goal oriented communicative skills. The research results reveal that medical interpreting at border crossing points should be regarded as intercultural mediation as takes place in unstandardized setting and involves a range of culturally and socially significant issues. As the research outcomes the preliminary list of medical interpreter's competences has been drawn.
