CONCLUSIONS:The results indicate that the level of dispersion of Aspergillus species differ significantly according to the location of the ward. These results are the baseline data and further efforts to decrease Aspergillus dispersion should be implemented in future construction and demolition work together with air sample monitoring. We will continue our collaborative project to ensure the significance of infection prevention during construction and demolition becomes widely known throughout Japan.BACKGROUND: Infection Preventionists (IP) play an increasingly important role in preventing healthcare associated infections from the physical environment especially during construction and renovation. The IP is an integral member during all phases of construction: the design, construction, move, and eventual operations for safe patient care. The IPs collaborate with construction to ensure infection control regulatory requirements are tracked along all construction phases. Educational infection control tools are developed in collaboration with all departments for a smooth transition into newly constructed hospitals. METHODS: Planning meetings were held monthly for 18 months between IP, construction team leaders and the specific departments during all phases of construction the IP team walked sites and identified issues that would need to be addressed in the hospital licensing phase. The IPs input was essential for selection of new products and equipment, placement of hand hygiene stations, isolation procedures, devised workflows, paths of travel for waste, and developed new policies based on the new hospitals' configuration. The IP team created a series of simple checklists, straightforward tools to educate and keep staff informed, and a "Move Day Plan (MDP)". RESULTS: The IP team's easy to use "Question and Answer" documents prepared staff for a successful licensing. These documents contributed to consistent messaging and staff education. Scavenger hunts provided staff fun opportunities to learn about physical locations in the new hospitals while imparting knowledge of the areas design/layout, safety, and infection prevention features. The MDP included infection prevention guidance on the path of travel for patient and equipment transport for isolated and non-isolated patients, cleaning of beds and other equipment. CONCLUSIONS: IPs may be presented with the challenge of opening new hospitals because of State and Federal building requirements. Using IPs' expertise on infection control risk assessment related to construction and patient/employee safety is paramount for a successful new hospital opening.
