Today’s trans youth grew up with the internet and online LGBTQ resources and spaces are important to these communities. This article focuses on conceptualising the digital cultural strategies that trans and gender questioning youth adopt both as social media users and producers in order to cope and thrive. Drawing on ethnographic data detailing a group of trans youth’s engagements with LGBTQ social media counterpublics and the wider web, and their movement between these spheres, in combination with close readings of online material identified as salient by the participants, this article argues that in the face of rampant transphobia and cis coded online paradigms, trans youth respond both critically and creatively. More specifically, I highlight how they resist prescribed user protocols of mainstream social networking sites as well as employ pragmatic strategies for navigating a binary gendered online world, staking out their own methods and aesthetics for self expression and community formation. Having examined the content and style of social media examples highlighted by the participants, the article contends that trans youth’s consumption and production of types of online and social media is significantly more diverse than research to date has recognised
Using the Gezi Park protests as a case study this article considers the performative component of protest movements including how and why protestors actively produce protest activity 'on the ground' and how this is expressed through visual images. It looks beyond iconic images which appear as emblematic of the protest and instead shifts our focus to consider the more 'everyday' or mundane activities which occur during a protest occupation, and explores how social media allows these images to have expressive and communicative dimensions. In this respect, protests can be performed through humdrum activities and this signifies a political voice which is communicated visually. The research is based on visual analysis of Twitter data and reveals methodological innovation in understanding how protestors communicate.
Protest movements are struggles to be seen and to be heard. In the last 60 years protest movements around the world have mobilized against injustices and inequalities to bring about substantial sociocultural, sociopolitical, and socio-economic changes. Whilst familiar repertoires of action persist, such as strikes, demonstrations, and occupations of public space, the landscape is very different from 60 years ago when the so-called ‘new social movements’ emerged. We need to take stock of the terrain of protest movements, including dramatic developments in digital technologies and communication, the use of visual culture by protestors, and the expression of democracy. This chapter introduces the volume and explains how aesthetics of protest are performative and communicative, constituting a movement through the performance of politics.
Young people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/ questioning (LGBTQ+) experience higher rates of mental health distress than reported in the general population, yet are far less likely to seek support services. Factors such as homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, cis-heteronormativity, fear of judgement and lack of sta awareness of LGBTQ+ identities are barriers to help seeking. This paper reports on the rst stage of a study that investigated and mapped current LGBTQ+ youth speci c mental health service provision across the UK. An online and o ine service mapping exercise was undertaken to locate services. 111 services were identi ed across the search strategies, the majority in urban settings in England. There were three signi cant characteristics of LGBTQ+ child and adolescent mental health UK provision. Firstly, there was an absence of mainstream NHS support that speci cally addressed the needs of LGBTQ+ young people. Secondly, the majority of LGBTQ+ youth mental health support was provided by voluntary/community organisations. Thirdly, there was a rare model of service based on collaborative working between NHS trusts and community/voluntary organisations. The results of this mapping exercise suggest that there is a reliance on the voluntary/community sector to provide mental health provision for LGBTQ+ young people. Furthermore, there was a distinct divergence in the approaches of the support provided by the voluntary/community sector and those from within the NHS. The a rmation of LGBTQ+ identities that is pivotal to the support provided by voluntary/community services contrasted with the 'treating everyone the same' approach prevalent in mainstream service provision. NHS mental health services must recognise that to tackle LGBTQ+ youth mental health inequality, statutory mental health support must address speci cally the mental health needs of LGBTQ+ young people.
