With the rapid advancement in technology in the last two decades, mainly because of the advent of the internet, the world no longer works the same. The advent of wireless networks and more recently mobile devices such as smart phones, tablets, etc. following the internet, contributed a lot their applicability in library's operations. As contained in extant literature, mobile devices have become a very important part of communication not only for telephone service users but also for the internet users. The two main reasons behind success of mobile technology is the benefits such as mobility and ubiquity served by mobile devices. To this end, the chapter explores the application of mobile technology on service delivery in libraries, the advantages and disadvantages. Also highlighted were the skills required by the librarians in incorporating mobile technologies to library services.
The study examined Nigerian Library and Information Science, LIS academics and scholarly publishing experience: challenges and the way forward. A purely qualitative method was adopted using interview as a data collection instrument. The population of study comprised LIS academics from two LIS departments in two universities at the South–south region of Nigeria. Four objectives were developed to guide the study. The results reveal that LIS academics publish mostly for promotion, to improve the knowledge in their chosen discipline, keep themselves abreast of the development in LIS discipline, LIS academics scholarly publication experience range from beginners up to twelve years with publications in various reputable LIS outlets. LIS academics face the challenges of heavy workload, inadequate experience, and lack of knowledge of relevant scholarly publishing outlets, and increasing rate of electronic journals due to advancement in ICT among others. To overcome the challenges, incentives should be provided to motivate LIS academics to engage in scholarly publishing, sponsorship of LIS academics to attend international conference to gain confidence, knowledge and experience on scholarly publishing, allocate money for staff to support their scholarly publishing, a compilation of a unified standard list of journals that should be a guide on where to get published.
Aim: Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) brought significant innovation and improvement to library services and methods of meeting user needs. Assessment of user satisfaction with the various library services is an important variable toward inclusive library management and marketing of library services in the 21st century. With the application of ICTs bringing about different resources and various accessibility modes (print and online), it became necessary to investigate user satisfaction with various available library resources and services. Methods: The study addressed user satisfaction using adapted customer satisfaction scores (CSAT) metric with Rodski Survey to elicit information from 560 respondents that visited the library within the space of one week. The questionnaire was given to the respondents during their library visit twice daily for one week and the process excluded those that have filled the questionnaire before. Results: The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed the level of user satisfaction to be average. It was also discovered that the resources in the library did not meet their information needs as the majority responded that the resources are inadequate and the overall assessment of their interaction with librarians is excellent despite the inadequate resources. Conclusion: Based on the findings, recommendations were made to create a holistic marketing strategy to improve usability of the library, to acquire more resources and funding to meet user expectations, and to address the need for adequate management of library resources.
The poor perception of libraries by the general public and their unfavorable position in government corridors can be corrected by library advocacy (LA). While we all struggle to gain support for our libraries, there is need to “talk-up” the library by showcasing its relevance to national development in the 21st century. As a result of this, there is need for a text on advocacy in Africa and beyond, which prompted this chapter on strategizing for library advocacy. The chapter looks at introduction to library advocacy, building team for library advocacy, strategies for developing and getting messages out in library advocacy, media of library advocacy, and getting feedback and appraisal of library advocacy. The chapter concludes by affirming that strategy for library advocacy will create a roadmap for promoting libraries among stakeholders, thus retaining its place of pride as a social and information-based institution. Thereafter, recommendations were made on how to ensure effective strategy for library advocacy.
