The innervation of free neuromast (sensory papillae) rows is described from Sihler wholemount preparations of four species of eleotridine gobies, one (Perccottus glenii) representing the ‘longitudinal’ type of neuromast arrangement, the others (Butis buits, Bostrychus urophthalmus, B. marmoratus) the ‘transverse’ arrangement. In the latter, the characteristic transverse cheek rows (1–7) are innervated from the infraorbital trunk of the anterior lateral‐line nerve. Longitudinal cheek rows b and d, and the three opercular rows, ot, os and oi, common to all species, are innervated by rami of the hyomandibular trunk of the same nerve. Two neuromast groupings are shown to have a mixed nerve supply. For the median preorbital snout rows, there is innervation from the infraorbital (s3 and r) as well as the supraorbital (s1 and s2) trunks of the anterior lateral line nerve. The anterior dorsal rows are supplied both by the posterior lateral‐line supratemporal ramus (rows g and m) and the anterior lateral‐line supraorbital trunk (rows o and n). The neuromast rows, under the designations of Sanzo, are tabulated according to innervation and their putative origin in the phyletic replacement of a complete head canal system seen in more generalized percomorph fishes.
To elucidate the phylogenetic relationship among stingrays of three freshwater and five marine spe cies of the genera Himantura, Dasyatis, and Pastinachus, belonging to the family Dasyatidae distribut ed in Thailand, Laos, India, and Japan, we determined the nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial DNA region encoding cytochrome b. Using two rayfish species belonging to the superfamily Mylio batoidea as out-groups, we found three clades for the collected stingrays in the family Dasyatidae from anlayses using the neighbor-joining, maximum parsimony, and maximum likelihood algorithms. While species belonging to the genus Himantura formed one group, Dasyatis laosensis and Dasyatis sp. formed another group. The results obtained failed to show clear phylogenetic relationships of the genus Pastinachus with the genera Dasyatis and Himantura, since the corresponding bootstrap resampling values were 72, 55, and 65 in the neighbor-joining, maximum parsimony, and maximum likelihood trees, respectively.
A new genus and species of gobiid fish, Egglestonichthys Patriciae, is described from the South China Sea. Certain features of the modified head lateral‐line system resemble those seen in eleotrine genera with ‘transverse’ suborbital sensory papillae, but the skeleton of the new goby is essentially gobiine. Aspects of the lateral‐line system indicate closest relationship with genera from both the IndoPacific area (Callogobius complex, Psilogobius, Stonogobiops) and the New World (Microgobius). Wider affinities with other gobiine and gobionelline genera are discussed. Discrepancies between arrangements based predominantly on lateral‐line characters and on osteology are noted and their implications considered for future classification of the gobioid fishes.
Native Thai species of Clarias catfishes and one species introduced from Africa can be easily distinguished by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis of allozymes. An undescribed species of Clarias was collected from Thailand and found to possess several fixed allelic differences from the Clarias previously studied.
