see, for example, the map on page 3).As well, multiple scales of maps would provide a context for the cities the author discusses. Such maps could help readers to understand, for example, the land/water connections, or distances between networks of settlements. Developing a strategy to show urban accretions and accumulation over time seems important to the trajectory of the book -a history of the African city into the 21st century. Second, the title does not do the book justice; I was somewhat put off by such an ambitious title for so slim a book. I realize that sub-sub-titles can be slightly annoying but … I believe a brief articulation of the purpose of the text would help move people to picking up the book in the first place. The references provided at the end of each chapter are extensive and well annotated; they make this book an incredible resource not only for introductory classes, but also for more experienced students and general readers. However, the format is fairly difficult to wade through. These references might have been better organized as endnotes, with a complete bibliography at the end of the text. But, this is a minor quibble, as I still enjoyed reading through what the author calls 'selected readings' and finding wonderful material to pursue.Freund ends on a cautious and optimistic note ('The African city will continue to develop and expand; it will continue to exhibit vitality and will more and more be the place where African futures are decided') -one that states the obvious yet begs for more books in this series, books that will discuss some of the topics he briefly raises.
