The literature on science in the Third World shows that we are far from an intellectual or political consensus about what scientific development entails. In different ways th6 books under review here suggest the nature of the impasse. Considering them as a group allows us to see that the problem goes deep enough to call into question the adequacy of our basic assumptions about science in particular and development in general.
