Career construction theory proposes that high career adaptability leads to positive adaptation outcomes during career transition. However, the specific pathways of how this happens remain underexplored. Drawing on the career construction model of adaptation, we hypothesized that career decision-making self-efficacy mediates the link of career adaptability with vocational identity clarity and life satisfaction as two measures of adaptation outcomes. We conducted a three-wave survey with an initial sample of 3126 Czech upper-secondary vocational graduates transitioning from vocational school to the labor market. Structural equation modeling revealed that career decision-making self-efficacy fully mediated the relationship between career adaptability before graduation and vocational identity clarity 20 months later. In contrast, the mediation effect of career decision-making self-efficacy on the relationship between career adaptability and life satisfaction was not supported. Additionally, in contrast to the previous literature, career adaptability was not directly related to vocational identity clarity and life satisfaction. Nevertheless, our findings demonstrated a positive long-term association of career adaptability with adaptation outcomes within the working life domain. Practical implications and future directions are discussed.
Empirický výzkum soudního rozhodování čelí řadě překážek, a to zejména v tuzemském prostředí. Je proto vynikajícím krokem vpřed, vznikne-li publikace jako Mimoprávní vlivy na rozhodování českého Ústavního soudu. Ocenění si zaslouží nejen svým záměrem, ale i provedením. Příští výzkumy by však mohly více zaujmout psychologickou perspektivu, například uvažováním o heuristikách, kognitivním uzavření nebo kognitivních stylech. Realizace takového výzkumného záměru je však možná jen v případě, že se soudkyně rozhodnou na studiích participovat. Cílem článku je tedy také apelovat na respondenty z řad soudců a představit psychologický výzkum jejich rozhodování jako disciplínu založenou na respektu k participantům a rovné spolupráci.
Interpreting indeterminate legal concepts solely via traditional legal analysis is an incomplete effort as it misses a crucial perspective – the endeavor to understand how these concepts are constructed by the people who apply them. In this book, we argue that these concepts are socially represented in the sense of the social representation approach of social psychology. Therefore, we should use empirical methods to further illuminate their structure and contents so that we understand and apply them correctly. We present three possible approaches to empirical study of indeterminate legal concepts and use them in three separate studies each aimed at understanding a specific concept. First, we present findings from a set of interviews on public order. Second, we show how a mixed-methods approach can be used to understand judge's dignity. Finally, we apply graph theory to illuminate how lawyers represent case law. Apart from introducing a certain analytical approach, each study also interprets its findings in relation to Czech legal system.
Living in today’s rushed time full of various changes increases the demands on the individual’s ability to adapt to these changes. Career adaptability plays an important role in coping with changing demands in the field of work. What is career adaptability? Why is it important, and what does it affect? The answers to these questions and many others are provided in the monograph, entitled “Career adaptability: Its Forms, Changes, Contexts, and Roles in the Lives of Young Adults Undergoing Upper-Secondary Vocational Education,” which is the first publication written on this topic in the Czech language. In the book, a team of authors presents the construct of career adaptability and the results of unique research carried out in the Czech Republic. In the first part, the reader may find an analytical overview of various concepts of career adaptability and related concepts. The central part of the publication is devoted to the results of quantitatively conducted longitudinal research, which aimed to identify career adaptability and its relationships to several demographic, school, relational, and personality variables in the case of students and later graduates of upper-secondary vocational education—those who are in the crucial stages of their career construction. Many empirical findings concentrated in this book are beneficial not only for the career counseling theories and research on career adaptability but also for vocational education or career counseling practitioners.
