The genus Sporormia is restricted to the type species S. fimetaria DeNot., S. fimicola Ahmed & Asah and S. mirabilis Bret. & Faur., in which the ascospores are arranged in a truncate bundle, parallel to the ascus and surrounded by a common gelatinous sheath. The cells of the ascospores are without germ slits.In Sporormiella, which is regarded as a distinct genus, the ascospores are not arranged in a truncate bundle. Each spore has a distinct and separate gelatinous sheath and each cell of the ascospore has an elongated germ slit. The type species is S. nigropurpurea Ell. & Ev.The following 35 species of Sporormia are transferred to Sporormiella: S. affinis Sacc., S. americana Griff., S. antarctica Speg., S. australis Speg., S. bipartis Cain, S. capybarae Speg., S. chaetomioides Griff., S. commutata Niessl, S. corynespora Niessl, S. dakotensis Griff., S. heptamera Auersw., S. herculea Ell. & Ev., S. insignis Niessl, S. irregularis I. Egel., S. kansensis Griff., S. lageniformis Fuckel, S. lata Griff., S. leporina Niessl, S. longispora Cain, S. megalospora Auersw., S. minima Auersw., S. muskokensis Cain, S. ontariensis Cain, S. ovina (Desm.) Sacc., S pascua Niessl, S. pentamera Oud., S. pilosa Cain, S. pilosella Cain, S. polymera Cain, S. pulchella Hansen, S. pyriformis Speg., S. scandinavica I. Egel., S. schoterriana Bret. & Faur., S. splendens Cain, S. vexans Auersw.There are 22 new species described in the genus Sporormiella, as follows: S. alloimera, S. anisomera, S. calomera, S. cylindrospora, S. cymatomera, S. decamera, S. dodecamera, S. dubia, S. euryspora, S. isomera, S. longisporopsis, S. minimoides, S. minipascua, S. octonalis, S. platymera, S. schadospora, S, septenaria, S. systenospora, S. subtilis, S. teretispora, S. tetramera, S. trogospora.These coprophilous species are from Argentina, Canada, Mexico, and the United States.A total of 66 species are described, 61 of which are illustrated. Keys to the species of Sporormia and Sporormiella are included.
The Trichocomataceae Fischer is discussed and shown to be the appropriate family for species of cleistothecial Ascomycetes with Aspergillus, Paecilomyces, and Penicillium imperfect states. The name Eurotiaceae Clem, and Shear is shown to be a later synonym for the Trichocomataceae and the name Aspergillaceae Link to be illegitimate when applied to Ascomycete perfect states. Included in the Trichocomataceae are the following genera: Byssochlamys Westling, Dactylomyces Sopp, Dichlaena Mont. and Dur., Emericella Berk, and Br., Eupenicillium Ludwig, Eurotium Link ex Fr., Gymnoeurotium gen. nov. (type species: Aspergillus athecius Raper and Fennell), Hamigera Stolk and Samson, Harpezomyces gen. nov. (type species: Aspergillus chrysellus Kwon and Fennell), Hemicarpenteles Sarbhoy and Elphick, Neosartorya gen. nov. (type species: Aspergillus fischeri Wehmer), Penicilliopsis Solms-Laubach, Petromyces gen. nov. (type species: P. alliaceus Malloch and Cain), Sporophormis gen. nov. (type species: Aspergillus spinulosus Warcup), Talaromyces Benjamin, and Trichocoma Junghuhn. It is suggested that the genera of Trichocomataceae have evolved from a stromatic ancestor similar to certain present-day Hypocreaceae and have undergone several important evolutionary simplifications and modifications. Evidence of these changes in both the perfect and imperfect states is discussed. Short descriptions are provided for each of the genera and references given to species treatments. A synoptic plate is included for identification of the genera and to illustrate the text.
A key is provided for the 64 recognized species of Podospora. The genus is restricted to species in which the ascospores have an apical germ pore, a basal hyaline cell, and gelatinous appendages. Illustrations are given for 56 species. Detailed descriptions are included for species which are not readily available and the remaining species are briefly described. The following 10 new species found on dung are described and illustrated: P. attoeochaeta from Mexico; P. didyma, Quebec; P. dolichopodalis, Louisiana and Mexico; P. gigantea, Louisiana and Arkansas; P. karachiensis, Pakistan; P. macropodalis, Mexico; P. mexicana, Mexico; P. miniglutinans, Mexico; P. pistilata, Mexico; P. venezuelensis, Venezuela, Mexico, Louisiana, South Pacific. The following new combinations are proposed: P. aloides (Sordaria aloides Fuckel), P. apiculifera (S. apiculifera Speg.), P. argentinensis (S. argentinensis Speg.), P. austro-americana (Hypocopra austro-americana Speg.), P. ellisiana (Pleurage ellisiana Griff.), P. longicollis (Schizothecium longicollis Ames), P. seminuda (Sordaria seminuda Griff.), P. tarvisina (Philocopra tarvisina Sacc.), and P. vesticola (Sphaeria vesticola Berk. & Br.).
The following new species and combinations are proposed: Albertiniella polyporicola (Jaczevski) comb. nov., Emericella aurantiobrunnea (Atkins, Hindson and Russell) comb, nov., E. fruticulosa (Raper and Fennell) comb. nov., E. heterothallica (Kwon, Raper and Fennell) comb. nov., E. parvithecia (Raper and Fennell) comb. nov., E. striata (Rai, Tewari and Mukerji) comb. nov., E. unguis sp. nov., E. violacea (Fennell and Raper) comb. nov., Eupenicillium molle sp. nov., Eurotium carnoyi sp. nov., E. cristatum (Raper and Fennell) comb. nov., E. chevalieri var. intermedium (Thom and Raper) comb. nov., E. montevidense (Talice and MacKinnon) comb. nov., E. niveo-glaucum (Thom and Raper) comb. nov., E. pseudoglaucum (Blochwitz) comb. nov., E. umbrosum (Bainier and Sartory) comb. nov., Microthecium inordinatum sp. nov., Petriellidium angustum sp. nov., Phaeotrichum benjaminii sp. nov., P. cylindrosporum sp. nov., Preussia cylindrica sp. nov., Preussia indica var. oryzetorum (Montemartini) comb. nov., Roumegueriella rufula (Berk. and Br.) comb. nov., Thielavia albomyces (Cooney and Emerson) comb. nov., T. terrestris (Apinis) comb. nov., Tripterosporella Pakistani (Mirza) comb. nov., Zopfia biturbinata (Dur. and Mont.) comb. nov., Z. duplicispora (Janse) comb. nov.
The family Sordariaceae is briefly defined and a list of cleistothecial genera given. Two species of Anixiella Saito & Minoura ex Cain, A. endodonta sp. nov., and A. monospora sp. nov. are described and a key to the four species of the genus included. Apodus deciduus gen. et sp. nov. is described. Two new combinations in Echinopodospora Robison, E. spinosa (Cailleux) Malloch & Cain and E. verruculosa (Cailleux) Malloch & Cain, are proposed to accept transfers from Tripterospora Cain and are followed by a key to species of Echinopodospora. The concept of Zopfiella Winter is broadened to include Z. pleuropora sp. nov. and three new combinations, Z. inermis (Cailleux) Malloch & Cain, Z. latipes (Lundqvist) Malloch & Cain, and Z. leucotricha (Speg.) Malloch & Cain, transferred from Tripterospora. A key to the six species of Zopfiella is presented. The new family Coniochaetaceae is proposed to accommodate the new genus Coniochaetidium and Coniochaeta (Sacc.) Massee. Two species of Coniochaetidium are described, C. ostreum sp. nov. and C. savoryi (Booth) Malloch & Cain, comb, nov., based on Thielavia savoryi Booth.
