Extensive search for plant microfossils in the Langpar sediments of Shillong Plateau has resulted in the recovery of a rich palynological assemblage from a green calcareous shale exposed along the eastern bank of the Umsohryngkew river, Therriaghat. Only the microplankton remains have been recorded and illustrated in this paper. The assemblage comprises 13 species assigned to 11 genera. Two genera, viz. Achomosphaera Evitt (1963) and Hystrichosphaeridium (Deflan.) Dav. & Will. (1966) are dominant while the genera Leptodinium Klem. (1960), Baltisphaeridium Eisen. (1958), Apteodinium Eisen. (1958) and Fromea Cook. & Eisen. (1958) are meagrely represented.
Attention is drawn to the occurrence of some algal and fungal remains from the Tura Formation of Garo Hills, Assam. The algal microplanktons comprise 7 genera with one species each. The genera Oligosphaeridium, Achomosphaera, Hystrichosphaera and Hystrichosphaeridium are well represented while the remaining genera are present in lesser frequencies. The fungal remains are represented by 8 genera and 10 species. One of the genera, viz. Cucurbitariaceites is new and is commonly found in the assemblage. The other genera that are commonly found are Parmathyrites, Phragmothyrites, Callimothallus and Notothyrites. Stratigraphical value of these remains, if any, will have to wait till the completion of successional studies now in progress.
The presence of algal microplanktons indicates a brackish-water environment of deposition.
An analysis of palynological samples, collected from Dawki and Cherrapunji areas in Shillong Plateau, Lower Assam, have revealed the occurrence of both miospores and paytoplankton. The samples represent three different formations, viz., Jadukata, Mahadek and Langpar. Present account deals with the taxonomic study of dinoflagellates and acritarchs with a discussion on the age of these formations. Microplankton forms recovered have been described under 21 recognisible genera and 19 species. Out of these, 9 species are new.
Jadukata and Mahadek formations have been assigned an Upper Cretaceous (Maestrichtian) age whereas Langpar Formation has been dated Palaeocene (Danian).
