On some Algal and Fungal remains from Tura Formation of Garo Hills, Assam

Abstract: Attention is drawn to the occurrence of some algal and fungal remains from the Tura Formation of Garo Hills, Assam. The algal microplanktons comprise 7 genera with one species each. The genera Oligosphaeridium, Achomosphaera, Hystrichosphaera and Hystrichosphaeridium are well represented while the remaining genera are present in lesser frequencies. The fungal remains are represented by 8 genera and 10 species. One of the genera, viz. Cucurbitariaceites is new and is commonly found in the assemblage. The other … Show more

“…The absence of a central core of thick walled cells in the thyriothecia of this species, and their structural nature led Kalgutkar and Jansonius (2000) to agree with Kar et al (1972) on transferring Microthyriacites edwardsii Rao 1958 to Phragmothyrites. However, they did not consider the new combination as validly published for the lack of citation of basionym.…”

“…C OALIFEROUS sequences of the Tura Formation occur at various places in the Garo Hills, Meghalaya (Raja Rao, 1981). Palynological studies of this formation dealt mostly with taxonomy, stratigraphic ranges of the palynotaxa and age determination (Banerjee, 1964;Biswas, 1962;Chatterjee & Ghosh, 1962;Ghosh AMN, 1954;Ghosh TK, 1969;Kar et al, 1972;Sah & Singh, 1974;Singh, 1977aSingh, , b, 1982. These palynoassemblages are characterised by dominance of angiosperm pollen showing botanical affinities with the plants pertaining to the megathermal evergreen forests existed in the region during the late Palaeocene.…”
