Objective: To translate and adapt the Diabetes Distress Scale for the Brazilian culture. Methods: The process followed international standards for adaptation of an instrument: translation, back translation and evaluation by a panel of judges, and pretest. Results: The stages of translation and back translation were performed successfully, and the evaluation of the synthesis version by the expert panel resulted in modification of items, ensuring the equivalence between the original and translated versions. During the pretest, there were reformulations of some items, making them clearer and easier to understand. Conclusion: The Brazilian version of the Diabetes Distress Scale received satisfactory results with respect to the process of translation and cultural adaptation. The measurement of psychological factors with the identification of emotional problems can serve as a useful tool in the evaluation of the variables that affect treatment adherence. The objective of this research was to study the cultural adaptation and validation of the Diabetes Distress Scale tool to Brazilian culture. To develop this research, we used the methodological framework advocated in the literature, which involves the steps of: translating the instrument to the target language, synthesis of translations, back-translation, evaluation by a committee of judges and conducting pre-test. Regarding psychometric properties, reliability of the Brazilian version of the DDS was evaluated for its homogeneity through the Cronbach alpha and comparison of continuous measures or sortable, we used the Mann-Whitney test. The validity was verified by comparing the scores of the DDS with the instrument for assessing quality of life WHOQOL-bref. The final version of the adapted instrument was subjected to a validation process of a sample of type 2 DM (n = 170) as an outpatient at a university hospital in the state of São Paulo. The results showed that the instrument high levels of internal consistency fot the total items (0,94) and for the domains: emotional (0,87), physician-related stress (0,88), therapeutic regimen (0,85) and interpersonal relations (0,81), with Cronbach's alpha coefficient. However, we note some limitations, it is recommended that future projects are carried out in order to better understand some findings as a lack of correlation between the measure of the total score and domains of the WHOQOL and DDS, and evaluate the stability of instrument.

Conclusions: Patient's perspective is an important factor in management of a disease especially under unusual circumstances like COVID-19. It should be taken into account to help in making efficient management planning in future.Legal entity responsible for the study: The authors.
