This study investigates if INOVASI's Guru BAIK pilot, an adapted Classroom Action Research approach, works to improve teacher competencies to deliver quality learning and if the improvements generate better learning outcomes. The pilot aims to enable teachers to develop their teaching competency by helping teachers develop a willingness to learn, and to become aspirational, inclusive and contextual in administering their teaching and learning process. We investigate the performance by comparing baseline and endline results of the pilots in Sumbawa and Southwest Sumba. The end-line study results show that Guru BAIK has increased the students' literacy and numeracy skills. The findings also demonstrate that it works better for less advantaged children, for instance due to gender and student's socioeconomic background. These positive outcomes may have been generated by better teaching practices. The teachers shifted their teaching practices to be more student-centered; they applied active learning, used learning media, improved the degree of student engagement, diversified types of student assignments, and reduced teacher absenteeism. To conclude, the adjusted CAR drives changes for teachers' mindset and practices and was proven to improve learning outcomes. Nonetheless, technical inputs are still required to sustain the results, in particular at higher grades.
Several studies on body size and hypertension have been conducted among various people and professions. Teachers serve as role models for their student's health and well-being, particularly regarding nutritional status and physical outlook. However, many teachers face health issues that they do not consider a threat to their career or personal life. The purpose of this research was to establish the relationship between nutritional status and the prevalence of hypertension among Islamic high school instructors in Medan. This cross-sectional research involved 74 teachers from three Islamic high schools in Medan between July-august 2022. Data collected using interviews, anthropometric and blood pressure measurements. The results showed that there were 40 teachers (54.1%) overweight based on BMI category, while there were 46 teachers (62.2%) had hypertension. A significant association between overweight nutritional status and the prevalence of hypertension was established using logistic regression analysis (p = 0.001, 95% CI: 2.145 -19.719). Teachers with overweight are 6.5 times more likely to have hypertension than those with normal nutritional status, which was controlled by the confounding variable, employee status (p = 0.016; OR 14.3, 95% CI: 1,629 -125,931). Therefore, the nutritional status of teachers in Islamic High School have to be concern to prevent hypertension, so they can have better perfomance in school and in a personal life.
Background: The growth and development of children under five years (toddlers) is an indicator of nutritional status in the community. North Sumatra Province is one of 27 provinces with the high prevalence of stunting (>=20%). Objective: This study aimed to identify a correlation between characteristics, knowledge of nutrition and nutritional status (H/A) among children aged 6-59 Months in Medan City. Methods: This observational study used a cross-sectional study design and was conducted from June to July 2022 at Titi Papan Primary Healthcare Center, Medan Deli District, Medan City. Sampling in this study was carried out using a random sampling technique, and the total samples were 153 toddlers. The independent variables in this study were characteristics and mother’s knowledge. While the dependent variable in this study was the nutritional status (H/A). Results: There were significant relationships between age (ρ=0.000), birth weight (ρ=0.018), family income (ρ=0.025) with nutritional status (H/A) of children aged 6-59 months, while characteristics such as birth length, family size and mother’s knowledge were not related with nutritional status. Conclusions: Nutritional status of children aged 6-59 months was influenced by birth weight. Babies with low birth weight (LBW) has a risk of stunting than those with normal weight.
Occupational stress and poor dietary practices have become a global health concern. Workers with poor dietary practices may be less productive and present at work. This study examined the relationship between occupational stress and diet quality on productivity loss among Islamic school teachers in Medan. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 50 Islamic school teachers in Medan. They were aged 19-64 years old and recruited using purposive sampling. Their occupational stress and diet quality were evaluated using the perceived stress scale (PSS) and the balanced diet index (BDI). Productivity loss was assessed based on the number of primary working days missed (absenteeism) due to poor health during six months. Negative binomial regression was used to examine the association between occupational stress and diet quality with productivity loss. The mean occupational stress, diet quality, and absenteeism were 44.89, 34.87, and 0.86 days, respectively. After controlling sociodemographic characteristics, the regression model indicated that productivity loss was positively associated with occupational stress (p=0.006). Consuming a high-quality diet was negatively associated with productivity loss (p=0.010). It concluded that occupational stress and diet quality were associated with teachers’ productivity loss. The study highlights the importance of occupational health promotion policies for teachers.
Nutritional counseling is an essential component of nutrition students to be equipped to address nutritional problems. The objective of the study was to analyze the correlation of nutrition students for teaching presence perception in blended learning to improve the learning outcomes of nutritional counseling stages. The study used a cross-sectional research design, nutrition students in nutritional counseling courses completed the 13-item Community of Inquiry (COI) questionnaire for teaching presence. The results showed that students had higher agreement across the level of teaching presence. The findings of this study suggest that perceived teaching presence was significantly related to improving the learning outcomes of nutritional counseling stages.
